I'm just about ready to decommission my last Server 2003 DC/GC (server01) so I turned on DNS logging to see which boxes are still using it as their DNS server. I found that my Exchange 2003 BE servers are showing up in the DNS log. I can see that server01 is not in the list of DNS servers on either Exchange server. Can I assume that they are communicating with server01 because it is still a GC? If yes, and if I remove the GC roll from server01, what impact with that have on Exchange/Outlook 2003 clients? Am I correct in understanding that Outlook may notify the user of a problem with Exchange until the BE servers re-query and find a new GC? Thanks.

If you have another GC in site then Exchange Server will try to connect other GC if one goes down. It could take some time just say 10-15 minut. For test your case, you can take down your GC for a while and check all goes well.Anil
