Understanding Advanced Find in Outlook and Exchange Online Mode

Hi,

we do see a behaviour in Advanced Find where I'm not sure if it is a bug or "by Design". This only happens when online mode of Outlook is used. Please do not advise to use Cached Moded as we are talking about a Remotedesktop-Services environment and it is not possible to use Cached Mode here.

When we use "Advanced Find" in Outlook to find sent Messages by the name of the sender we are not able to just enter for example the last name of the sender and get results. As soon was we use the button "Sent to" and choose an account from the GAL or own contacts we will see results. The issue is: Not all messages sent people are in the GAL or personal contacts. So the search is useless at all.

Search with just the last name - no results:

Search with User selected from the GAL (or local contacts) we will get results:

Is this a bug or "by Design

Hi Peter,

What's the version of Exchange server you are using?

It seems that the searching hasn't finished from the first screenshot you attached. The Stop button is still clickable.

According to my testing in my Outlook 2013 environment, it took a long time to finish the searching when using Online Exchange mode, however, it should work when searching with just the last name. This is a known issue that Outlook Online mode is having a considerable amount of delay when performing an advanced search, and we haven't found a solid solution for this. Please wait until the searching finishing (the Stop button become grayed out, just like it in the second screenshot), and then check if it returns any results.

Please let me know the result.

Hi Steve,

good catch. :-) - but the screenshot was taken within my Office365 Mailbox where the Advanced Find works so I took the screenshot before the first results were shown. We do have different customers where we see that issue and the "Stop" button is not greyed out after the search is finished.

We are talking about Exchange 2013 CU5 and 2013 CU7 environments.
We have already tried to rebuild the index (without success) and the CMDLet Test-ExchangeSearch on the Server works fine.

Since you are using Outlook in online Exchange mode, Outlook uses the indexing available on the server when searching. The CMDLet Test-ExchangeSearch on the Server working fine indicates that the indexing is not the problem.

In theory, the Stop button will be greyed out when the searching is complete, just like the second screenshot you attached. When testing the issue, it took me more that 15 minutes to finish the search when searching in online Exchange mode. I doubt the customer didn't wait until the searching complete and thought it returned no results. Would you please contact one of the customers and confirm this for us? If this is not the case, we'll consider other factors.

Hi,

just to update if someone else is hitting this issue: It is fixed in CU7 for Exchange 2013: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45221 - the more specific KB is: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3009631

I've overseen this and during writing this article, CU8 is the most recent update.
