Unable to start Outlook 2003
HelloI just recently have one user who is getting the message "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The Microsoft Exchange server is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server is down for maintenance" whenever he tries to open Outlook 2003. Outlook then bins him out.He gets the same error regardless of which client he logs on to or regardless of what site / DC he logs into, but he is the only user (that I know of) having this issue. I got him to log onto a client he had never been on before to get a new profile but that didnt work. I also moved his mailbox to a different server but again the same error occurs.Has anyone seen this before and know how to fix it?I have done a lot of Googling but can find nothing that helps. I was going to delete his profile completely tomorrow and ensure a completely new profile is created when he next logs on but unsure if that will work either.

Hi, Make sure that Information Store and Service Host services are running on the mailbox server where this user's mailbox exists. Also mailbox database should be mounted. As you said that other users dont have this problem, so are their mailboxes also exist in same mailbox database? Good Day Im_Lost, As one of your stated workaround resolutions to fix the issue of one client which you moved his mailbox to a different server that's why you or he/she encountered error on accessing his/her mailbox and which also result to Unable to start Outlook 2003, follow these steps below: 1.) Try to go to another Exchange Server where you move the Mailbox open the Exchange System Manager, expand the Administrative Groups, then expand the First Administrative Groups, then expand the Server, then expand the First Storage Group, then expand the Mailbox Store (ServerName), then point to Mailboxes then try to find the user mailbox on the right pane. 2.) Since you move the mailbox make sure that his/her MAPI Clients or Microsoft Outlook 2003 points the right server where you move his/her mailbox @ Mail Setup, E-mail Accounts, under Exchange Server Settings, Microsoft Exchange Server: and User Name: by pointing to the right Exchange Server and User Name and by clicking the button of "Check Name" it will be automatically confirms the Exchange Server and the User Account. 3.) Or make a new Outlook Profile by going to Control Panel then Mail, then you will see there the Show Profile, then delete the entry, then click the Add button to set or configure again his/her Outlook Profile, the point him/her to the right Exchange Server and User Name then click the Check Name in order to confirm if not confirm repeat the step 1. You can do this step 3 on Microsoft Outlook, on Tools Menu, then E-mail Accounts. Hope this will help you. Thanks and Regards, Cheers...

Thanks for your replies.Looks like it was all my fault after all!The MTA stack and System Attendant services had both not started properly on one of my servers. This I suspect was following a reboot earlier in the day that was required after installing some patches.Secondly, I never noticed it because I ended up looking at the wrong user account. Therefore the actual (and wrong) user I was looking at was on a fully working server. All my fault finding from there was on the wrong account on the wrong server, no wonder I didnt get anywhere!Anyway in the cold light of day I realised my mistake and have started the services. Funny old thing he is managing to get in just fine now.I guess that will teach me to listen to account names properly over the phone next time. Thanks again for your replys anyway

Good Day Im_Lost, It's okey we learn for our mistakes sometimes which is normal to be able to conquer our fear when times like this try to research, study, testing what will be the possible way when it comes just like this and try to have your self testing lab environment and anticipate all the possible scenarios. Another way you can use the Exchange Utility: Profile Redirector or Exchange Profile Update November 2, 2005. Exchange Redirector (ExProfRe.exe), also known as the Exchange Profile Update tool, updates Microsoft Office Outlook profiles after moving mailboxes across Exchange Server organizations or administrative groups. Here's the link in order you to study and test with your testing lab environment. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56F45AC3-448F-4CCC-9BD5-B6B52C13B29C&displaylang=en Hope this will help you on the other way. It's okey don't worry its normal good luck, Thanks and Regards, Cheers...
