Unable to send emails with attach items still attached
Hi Everybody, We have a 2003 Domain with a 2007 Exchange organization set up. When I try to send an email where I attach an outlook msg using the attach item in outlook 2007, the recipient doesn't receive the attachments. They just receive a normal email with no attachments attached to it. There is also no error or message on the received mail. I did some testing and found out that as soon as I make a user part of the Exchange Organization Administrators group, he is able to send emails with outlook msg attachments attached. Please help me in this regard, I thank in advance Francois Kaljee SA

Hi Francois Kaljee SA, Form your description, I understand that when a user send email with attach items, the recipient can only receive without attach item. But when sender is one of the Exchange Organization Administrators group, the recipient can receive the email with the attach item. Please correct me if I misunderstand the problem. For this issue, please help me to confirm the following information: 1. Can you see the attachments via OWA? 2. Does this issue occur to one user or several users? 3. Does this issue occur to all the recipients (external and Internal)? 4. How about other attachments (such as: word, jpg), can them be received? 5. Please confirm whether the security software have the similar configuration for Administrator and other users(who is not in part of the Exchange Organization Administrators group) . Hi Evan, You understand the problem correctly. For your reply questions 1. Can you see the attachments via OWA? No, the attachments is not visible in OWA either. 2. Does this issue occur to one user or several users? It happens to the entire exchange organization, about 200 users 3. Does this issue occur to all the recipients (external and Internal)? All recipients, internal and external 4. How about other attachments (such as: word, jpg), can them be received? All other attachments is fine, office suite, pdf and the rest is coming through. 5. Please confirm whether the security software have the similar configuration for Administrator and other users(who is not in part of the Exchange Organization Administrators group) . We have no security software on our exchange environment and no client scanning on outlook. We only monitor and scan external traffic with Mail Marshall and ISA2006

Dear Francoois, I have went through your post. As per my understanding, you must once review the attachment filtreration settings done in your Exchange Organizationn Server (Edge, HUB, CAS) and also on your ISA Server as ther is no valid reason to block particularly the .msg file to be sent. May also be possible that Exchange Admin group has been deligayed the rights to send the attachment of .msg and the rest are not. Please go through your gateways and all possible securities implimented and surely you'll overdo the challenge.

Dear Ranjan, We have no attachment filltering enabled whatsoever on any of our exchange layers. No edge subscriptions, no hub transport rules enabled that block anything and our permission groups has Anonymous users, exchange users, exchange servers and legacy exchange servers enabled as allowed. CAS I'm not so familiar, please explain. Maybe there is default rules that gets applied with the instilation of Exchange server 2007. Our ISA has nothing to do with our problem as internally we have this problem as well as externally. I just explaned our security set up that we don't have any scanning on exchange and outlook clients enabled. There has been no delegation set up for any groups, it all is the default groups with the default instillation of exchange 2007. Our environment is only 6 months old. And the install was done by the book, step by step. Thanks Francois

Hi Francois, From your posts, I understand that you have not found the reason. So I suggest you use pipline Tracing to help you troubleshoot the problem. Pipeline tracing is a diagnostic feature in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 that enables you to capture diagnostic information about e-mail messages as they encounter transport agents registered on Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) events in the transport pipeline. You can follow this document to enable it: How to Enable Pipeline Tracing http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125018(EXCHG.80).aspx Please help me to collect the pipeline tracing log, and paste the log in your next post(or send to my mailbox: Dismount2012@hotmail.com ).
