Unable to install exchange 2007 sp1 rollup 5 - Setup ended prematurely
Trying to install exchange 2007 sp1 rollup 5 on a fresh server installation (the server is an additional one to the organisation). After acknowedging the licence agreement, allowing the software to run I get "Setup Wizard for Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (kb953467) ended prematurely. Nothing in the event logs or in the c:\exchangesetuplogs directory.Running with Exchange2007-KB953467-x64.-EN.msp /lxv* c:\installs\hotfixes\953467.log gives me the following at the end of the log file (as it's 32k I'm not posting the entire thing here)I checked the c:\windows\installer directory and 40b87.ms does not exist.Server has been rebooted, rollup 4 is installed.EXBPA has a critical issues of "the address type 'MS:AMD64' is missing from current Active Directory" Don't think this is relevant but....Any ideas? Hi, First please try to check the version of Store.exe. You can right click on store.exe from c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin Please check add/remove to see any Exchange related update, please post it here. We suspect some interim updates have been installed on the Exchange Server. Besides, please check if any watermark under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\<name of role>. Hope it helps. Xiu

Store is version 8.01.0311.002The only Exchange related update is Update Rollup 4I'm not seeing anything called Watermark in any of those roles keysOut of interest (just in case it's relevant) the exbpa won't update either giving the generic "an error occurred trying to access the web". However attempting to connect to the website that it refers to - https://www.microsoft.com/exchange/code/ExBPA/Exchange2007/3.3/en/ - doesn't exist. I don't think this is related but just adding it in case!

Hi, Please send 953467.log to Xiu Zhang for further troubleshooting. Besides, More background information may need. Which role has been installed on this server? What is the Operation System for this server? Since this is the additional newly installed Exchange Server, then what is the version of the other Exchange Server? Are these two servers in the same domain? Whats the relationship between these two servers? Have you installed rollup5 on the other Exchange Server? Regards, Xiu

Its the standard single server setup, ie not edge, and containing mailboxes etc. Can';t remember the role names off the top of my head at the moment - Log file sent to you. OS is windows 2008, other server is exchange2003sp2 running on windows 2003 sp1. The two servers are in the same domain. The other server will be removed once I've migrated to this new server. I've not installed rollup5 as it doesn't exist for e2k3.Andy

Hi, From the setup log, we found MSI (c) (80:24) [14:40:01:345]: Note: 1: 2262 2: Error 3: -2147287038 .It may indicate that %SYSTEMDRIVE%\ExchangeSetupLogs folder has been deleted, renamed, or moved after the installation of Exchange 2007. If the ExchangeSetupLogs folder was renamed or moved, restore it to the root folder of the drive on which the operating system is installed. If the ExchangeSetupLogs folder was removed and cannot be restored, create an empty folder that is named ExchangeSetupLogs in the root folder of the drive on which the operating system is installed. For example, create the following folder: c:\ExchangeSetupLogs If it is not the case, please feel free to let me know. Regards, Xiu

That directory did exist. I checked the permissions and even gave the users write access. Tried to install again - same problem.I then renamed the directory, created a new one, set permsissions for users=modify - tried again, same issue. In case it helps the problem occurs just after the screen shows Stopping Services.

I exactly have the same issue on my side.Already tried the following:- Recreate the ExchangeSetupLogs folder- Applied the workaround for the CRL Download timeout issue (altering the .config files for the service exe's)- Had the same issue on UR4, not sure about UR3.Server:Win2008x64, Exch2k7 with Hub Transport role, Mailbox Store, CAS, UM (not configured yet)The server is a single-server setup with AD/DNS on the box.Forefront for exchange evaluation is installed (not yet expired)Same issue for me: Update installs fine and at the end where it states starting services it hangs for a few minutes and then displays the error 'Update rollup 5 installation ended prematurely'. For me the Transport service is not starting. Starting manually afterwards is no problem at all. Thanks for the help!

Hi, Please ensure that all the Microsoft Exchange related services have been started. And then please try to re-install rollup 5. Besides, please send servicecontrol.log in the exchangesetuplogs directory to me. We found error listing below in the setup log. ok - now we're getting somewhere - I checked the services and the system attendant wasnt' started (again). I had checked that on the previous installations and it had been installed. All the other services set to automatic were running.I ran the uninstall again and now checked in the exchangesetup log directory and got the following - [12:40:45] ************************************************[12:40:45] * ServiceControl.ps1: 12/2/2008 12:40:45 PM[12:40:45] Performing service control with options: BeforePatch[12:40:45] Setting ApplicationBase to E:\Exchsrvr\bin[12:40:45] Setting AssemblyName to Microsoft.Exchange.PowerShell.Configuration,Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35[12:40:45] Setting CustomPSSnapInType to Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShel.SetupPSSnapIn[12:40:45] Setting PowerShellVersion to 1.0[12:40:45] Setting Description to Setup Tasks for the Exchange Server (v240)[12:40:45] Setting ModuleName to E:\Exchsrvr\bin\Microsoft.Exchange.PowerShell.onfiguration.dll[12:40:45] Setting Version to 8.0.0.0[12:40:45] Setting Vendor to Microsoft[12:40:46] Saving service and registry data[12:40:46] Saving service state to 'c:l\Temp\StoppedServices.xml'...[12:40:46] Error:The problem looks like it is because I don't have a c:l\ directory-why it is trying to write there I don't know. This also explains why it crashes just after stopping the services.I created a l directory in c:\, the install directory and c:\exchangesetuplogs, c:\windows and c:\windows\system32 just in case. that didn't make any difference.

Hi, Please change the location of your %temp% folder. Click on the Start menu, choose Run and type sysdm.cpl Click on the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button at the bottom. Click on "TEMP" and then "Edit". We need to correct it to c:\Temp\ Hope it helps. Xiu
December 4th, 2008 7:47am

Oops - that is rather embaressing! I change the temp location manually and must have hit the l at the same time as the :Well spotted! Out of interest the offending variable was actually TMP - my TEMP directory was correct but TMP was wrong. It's working now.Maybe we could have an error check put into the script to check that the temp/tmp directory actually exists otherwise display an error. To be honest I am surprised I hadn't seen anything else complain but I guess most things use TEMP (which was correct)Andy
