Unable to find words inside a pdf file in outlook when outlook is in cached Exchange mode.

Hi All,

I have this issue. We installed Adobe ifilter 11 on our Lab Exchange 2010 SP3 RU8 server for testing. We see Outlook web app is able to capture the text strings inside the pdf files from the search.

But the same does not work in outlook when it is searched in the mailbox where outlook is running in Cached Exchange mode.

When we use online mode it is able to capture the words in the search inside the .pdf files.

Does any have any idea how to make this work ?

In production we have Ifilter 9 and it works fine in all the above scenarios.

Also i am using Outlook 2010 in my

Hi,

I did a test:

I sent an email with a .pdf attachment. On OWA, I was able to search the email by the text strings; In Outlook cached Mode, I could capture the text strings as well.

The result above makes me believe you may need to confirm Outlook has been indexed, we may even try rebuilding the Index to check the result.

The Index option: In Outlook, File -> Options -> Search -> Indexing Options.

Make sure Outlook is included and if you need to rebuild the index, click Advanced -> Under Index Settings -> Click "Rebuild".

Outlook uses different search mechanisms in Online and Cached Mode, in cached mode the search is based on the local Windows Index, so the steps above are suggested.

Please feel free to let me know if I misunderstood anything.

Hi Melon,

Thank you for the explanation. I see the indexing is complete as in the below screenshot for the lab profile in outlook. The issue is only with the Lab Exchange mailboxex. The production one works as expected but they have Adobe ifilter 9 there.

Also i tried the same in a different desktop. But the issues still exists for Lab

Please let me know if there is any other things i can test.

Hi,

In the Indexing Options, go to Advanced -> File Types -> Find "pdf" and make sure you have selected "Index Properties and File Contents" for pdf files.

As I'm not familiar with Adobe ifilter, it seems now I don't have further thing to suggest. If you can confirm that only Adobe ifilter 11 has the issue and Adobe ifilter 9 doesn't, probably you should contact Adobe for this problem.

Hi There,

Sorry for the delay in reply.

We consulted Microsoft directly on this.

I am not sure how this worked before but below is the answer

If you are using cached mode then outlook searches the local .ost and IFilter here is required.

So basically a 32 bit client machine will have it already installed if he installs adobe reader.

In a 64 bit os Adobe reader does not include Ifilter 11 in it, So we need to manually install it.

So i feel Client should have adobe ifilter installed in the local machine for this to work.
