Unable to create new public folder store
The background is there used to be a smbs 2003 which was then migrated to a server 2008 with exchange 2010 we have been having numerous issues with the public folders, today when I tried to create a new public folder database as a test I got the error listed below. (I am unable to view the public folders in the pfmc(public folder management console) i get this error when clicking on the default public folder "cannot complete the operation because there isn't an available public folder database on server lc*** it was running the command "get-publicfolder -getchildren -indentity '\' -server lc***) Microsoft Corporation Microsoft® Windows® Operating System 6.1.7600.16385 Unexpected error [0x785FAAF3] while executing command 'new-publicfolderdatabase -Server 'LCSSER2' -Name 'test123' -EdbFilePath 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\test123\test123.edb' -LogFolderPath 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\test123''. I'm not familiar with SBS migrations, but from Exchange standpoint, possibly missing the public folder container during the migration. 1. Start menu, type adsiedit.msc 2. Expand Configuration, services, microsoft exchange, first org, admin groups, Exchange admin groups, Folder hiearchies. On the right pane do you see CN=public folders? Yes there is a CN=Public Folders there.

If you right click properties of cn=public folders and look at msExchOwningPFTreeBL does it point to a valid store?James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Yes its pointing at at lc**2 Public Store which is a valid public store which is supposedly mounted (according to the ecm)
February 16th, 2011 12:33pm

Go back to adsiedit Expand Configuration, services, microsoft exchange, first org, admin groups, Exchange admin groups, cn=databases, cn=public folder database servername. Highlight this folder, properties. Look for msexchowningpftree, what does it point to? Is it pointing to the correct hiearchy?James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

It's not there I have "msexchOWATranscoding..." then "msExchParentPlan.."

Are you sure you're going into the properties of the folder? cn=public folder database servername (not on the right pane cn=servername)James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I'm sorry you are correct It's pointing to the correct hiearchy.
February 16th, 2011 1:04pm

You mentioned that when you went to properties of cn=public folders and look at msExchOwningPFTreeBL it was pointing to a valid store. I don't see this attribute on Exchange 2010, only on 2007. I have a feeling you didn't migrate the hiearchy during your migration. When you're looking at the cn=folder hierarchy are you looking at the legacy Administrative Group or the new one cn=exchange admin group (FYDIB0HF23SPDLT) James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

How’s the issue currently? Does SBS 2003 server still exist in the environment? Please increase the diagnostic logging level of the public folder component on the MBX server, and then reproduce the issue, see if there’s any further error event in the application log Manage Diagnostic Logging Levels Please run ExBPA against the exchange 2010 server for health, permission and baseline check Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Exchange sbs 2003 was removed violently from the enviroment (it completely crashed and no backup or data can be recovered) some of the migration had taken place before. but not completely.
