Unable to Copy Exchange 2010 Media to File System/Software Share - Invalid MS-DOS Function Error Message
I'm trying to copy the Exchange Server 2010 Enterprise with SP1 media to a software share so that I can add the latest Exchange Update Rollup Package to the installation. Per the Exhange Server Deployment Assistant: We recommend installing the latest update rollup for Exchange 2010 on all your servers. Although you can install update rollups on a server after Exchange 2010 has been installed, it's also possible and less time-consuming to incorporate the update rollup into the install server installation process. To do this, copy the contents of the Exchange 2010 DVD to the file system, and then copy or move the downloaded update rollup file to the Updates folder in the installation tree. When you perform the procedure below, the update rollup will be installed as part of the initial installation process. The problem is when you copy the contents of the Exchange 2010 DVD with SP1 and paste it anywhere (newtork share, local file system), you get the message "Invalid MS-DOS Function" when it encounters some of the .dll's. ?

Download SP1 from Microsoft fresh - the SP1 download is the complete installation - just without the Unified Messaging language packs. This isn't an issue I have seen before, so I would suspect that copy is bad. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I've downloaded Exchange Server Enterprise 2010 with Service Pack 1 right from the Microsoft Volume Licensing website. I want the slipped stream version so I don't have to apply SP1 later.

Doesn't matter where you download it from, the code is identical. There is no such thing as a slipstreamed version, SP1 is the complete code and can be used for either an upgrade or a fresh installation. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I'm having this problem as well... the "Invalid MS-DOS Function" error. However I am having this problem when I try and simply install exchange. I have it also when I try to run Setup /PrepareSchema from an elevated command prompt. Or any other switch. When I put the CD in, it comes up with the install menu, though I have some red X's on the side, presumably where pictures should be. It is able to see that .NET 3.5 and Powershell are installed. I'm able to choose to only install language on DVD. But when I click to Install Microsoft Exchange, I almost immediately get an error. The title bar of the error is "Copy File", and the top message is "invalid MS-DOS function". The first file it's trying is ABV_DG.dll. I've tried skipping the first few, but it keeps doing this for the next file, and the next, and so on. Not sure if I could skip my way to an eventually installation, but obviously there would then be the problem of missing files. This Exchange 2010 with SP1. I've re-downloaded from eOpen several times, but my result is consistent. It reports the download size as 4.54 GB, but only results in a 2 GB ISO file. I assume that is simply because I'm not getting all languages. I've also tried ensuring that all of my prerequisite steps are done. That is running clean, as in ready to install. Help?? Thanks

Download SP1 from the public web site. If you aren't using Unified Messaging then you do not need to download the language packs. It is classic sign of a bad download. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Thank you Sembee. I am doing a new install (moving up from exch 2003). I'm downloading the full copy of exchange 2010 with sp1 from the eopen volumn license site. I don't think there is another place (other than buying media) to download the full cd. I agree with you that it certainly seems like a media problem. However it seems strange since I have downloaded the copy from eOpen at least 4 times, and I get the same result each time. I suppose I could try strictly downloading Exchange 2010 without sp1 from eOpen, and then getting sp1 separately. Seems ashame though to go through that process for a fresh install.

You can install a fresh installation of Exchange 2010 from the SP1 download that is available on the public site. You do not have to use the download from eOpen. All Exchange 2007/2010 service packs are the complete product, rather than just the update. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

for the record, the fix in my case was to re-download the ISO, burn it to CD and then copy the contents of the CD to a network folder. You may see this issue if you attach the iso directly to a VM in VMware and try to copy the contents to a network share. Again, the above resolved in my case.

Mine also was an issue of trying to attach the iso directly to a VM.

Anyone get a real answer for this, I have D/L Exchange 2010 wSP1 several times now and if i mount the iso or use it through VM are I get the same error. Burning to DVD and then copying is not really the answer, our servers are in a DC and virulised. we need the ISO to work as it should.

looks like if you D/L using the D/L manager you get the 4.5 Gb ISO, using the web download only gets you 2Gbish, so definatly a MS D/L issues. come on MS sort it out.

Sembee's solution worked for me.. which was instead of downloading the copy from volume licensing site, I downloaded strictly the public SP1 download. That seemed strange since it was just SP1 and not Exchange 2010 with SP1, but what he said turned out to be true... SP1 is the full program, not just SP1. I was able to extract this downlaoded file and then copy it to a directly local to the server I was working on, and run everything from there. Perhaps it would also work to take the files from your ISO and move them to a separate directly first, and then transfer that directory to the local server that way. It's hard to believe that their volume licensing download is broke and they don't know it, but for some reason working with the files mounted (I am VM as well) or burned to a CD failed consistently. But in the end, it's not so bad having a copy of the cd in a local directory. Doesn't take up much room, and allows you to refer to it without remouting the cd or whatever.
