Turning Off 8 Bit Mime in exchange 07
Hello All, I've been searching forums for about 3 hours now and decided to try a better resource. The tech community. Over the past couple of days I've been gettingone weird bounce back when sending to several outside domains. The bounce back gives the following ndr. #5.6.1 smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host> #SMTP# I've found some suggestions saying try turning off 8 bit mime. Since the recieving server is bouncing my outbound email back i figure i need to change something on the send connector. What is the cmd to see if 8 bit mime is currently on or off? Secondly, what would be the command to toogle bewteen the 2? I have a front end and backend. Would I just change it on maybe the front end or both machines? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My head is beginning to bleed from banging itagainst the wall...haha

Hi, Check if there are third party transport agents on the Exchange box. Try disabling them and check if you are able to send the messages. If this does not solve the issue create a send connector which sends to the specific domains and set it up to send HELO instead of HELO. This will ensure that 7-bit is used instead of 8-bit. I'm fairly new to exchange 07. When setting up the internet connector through the console it doesnt really give me an option to use ehlo insead of helo. I take it; it must be done though the exchange cmd? would you happen to know the command?

Hi, This is correct you can do this by executing the following command: New-SendConnector -Name Test -AddressSpaces testdomain.com -ForceHELO $true This will create a send connector with the name Test which is only used to send mails to the domain testdomain.com Regards, Johan blog: www.johanveldhuis.nl

Issue description: Users got NDR when send mails to external domain 554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host Yes, we can force server to publish 7bit MIME by using HELO as Johan said Your symptom also matches a known issue in the exchange 2007 RTM which has been fixed in SP1. Please does a test, send mail without attachment, send mail with attachment. Notes: If you add an attachment (anything other than plaintext attachment, like a JPEG or PDF), when the mail is processed on the first Hub server, if there is an attachment, it sets the body type to binary (which is 8bit). Without the attachment, since most text is 7bit, the mail will deliver To resolve this issue, we have two solutions: Upgrade Exchange 2007 to SP1 Disable the verb 8bitmime on the smart host, so Exchange will convert all the email to 7bit before sending to the smart host Collect info in case needs further analysis: 1. Is the issue also happened constantly when users sent mails to those external domains, before you got this NDR now? 2. Please describe your environment more detailed, is it a mixed org, exchange 2003 and 2007? 3. Whats the detailed version of exchange 2007, RTM or SP1? If its SP1, did you upgrade exchange 2007 to SP1 right before you encountered this issue?

Thanks much Johan. That did the trick. DoI have to add a seperate connector per domain i have that issue with? Seems to be with only 2 domains so I made a connector per domain. Can you seperate the domains with ";" under just the one connector say the "force helo" connector. Regardless, Thanks for your time and wisdom.

Johans Solution did fix my problem. I run a frontend/backend config. We just upgraded from 03 to 07. The 03 boxes have been decommissioned and i am running on the 07 only. The serversare SP1, although thanks for the advice. Seems there are lots of improvemnts in SP1 as comnpared to RTM release. You have excellent suggetions and i appreciate your time to jump in with Johan and speak with me. You guys arean excellent resource. THX!

We're having a similar issue and I'm not sure what change We are running mixed mode with Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007. I have one user who we've moved over to 2007 that is running an IMAP client and when he sends out emails to outside addresses, ocassionally he's getting an NDR with the following: 5.6.1 smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host This worked fine when his mailbox was on 2003 I'm assuming there's a setting that needs to be changed or added to the Exchange 2007 box to get this to go away. Is it 8bitMIME that needs to be shut off or is this something else? This is happening for several domains and I'd rather not create a bunch of different rules to get around this, so if anyone has run into this issue and has any input, I'd greatly appreciate it thanks NM
