Transport service problem and Windows 2000 AD requirements
I have a problem getting the Microsoft Exchange Transport service to start. It's led me down a few paths, but I haven't solved it yet. This is a new Windows Server 2003 x64 SP2 server. I've joined it to our existing AD domain and also made it a domain controller. the existing domain consists ofa Windows 2000 SP4 server running as a file server and domain controller anda Windows 2000 SP4 server running as a Exchange 2000 server and domain controller. The existing Exchange 2000 is running in Native mode and Active Directory is also in 2000 Native mode. I didthe Exchange 2007 ForestPrep and DomainPrep before the install and they ran successfully. I've also transfered all 5 FSMO roles to the new Windows 2003 domain controller and made it a Global Catalog server. I initially recieved an error upon installing the Hub Transport role saying that it couldn't start the service. I tried a few more uninstalls and reinstalls with the same error. Eventually I installed from the command line with the DoNotStartTransport option without errors. The error in the EventLog when the service tries to start comes up 4 times and is: Event Type:ErrorEvent Source:MSExchange CommonEvent Category:General Event ID:4999Date:8/6/2007Time:5:07:27 PMUser:N/AComputer:EXCHANGE07Description:Watson report about to be sent to dw20.exe for process id: 4744, with parameters: E12, c-RTL-AMD64, 08.00.0685.020, edgetransport, mscorlib, M.E.N.ComputerInformation.GetComputerName, System.UnauthorizedAccessException, b87f, 08.00.0685.022 For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I've searched for this error with no luck. However, I'm also getting a lot of this error also, and twice each time, once for each 2000 domain controller: Event Type:WarningEvent Source:MSExchange ADAccessEvent Category:Topology Event ID:2116Date:8/6/2007Time:1:23:15 PMUser:N/AComputer:EXCHANGE07Description:Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGYSERVICE.EXE (PID=1796). The domain controller <my 2000 AD controller>is running Windows 5.0 (2195) (Unknown Service Pack). Exchange Active Directory Provider requires that domain controllers are running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later versions of Windows. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. From what I read I thought that the only requirement was that 1 of my domain controlles had to ne Windows 2003. Is this the root problem for the Transport service not running? I'm at my wit's end and looking for any direction of what to check. Thank you!

I found a tip from Mathew Watts (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1855168&SiteID=17&pageid=0#1299734) to add the Exchange server's computer account to the Administrators group in the domain. This allowed the service to run successfully. I had read other's accounts of changing the account that the service logged in as, but then having mail delivery problems, so I was leary to try that. Thanks Mathew!

Hi, I have the same problem. When I try to create a folder in my transport agent (developing in C#.net)it is giving the Exception System.UnAuthorizedAccessException. When I change the MS Exchnage Transport service logon to Local system account from 'NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService'transport agent is not throwing any exception. How can solve the exception when Transport service logon is 'NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService'. How to add 'NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService' user information in Exchange server computer? Thanks in advance.
