Transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 in Multiple Domains
I have a total of three domains, one is the forest root and the other two are children of the forerst root. In one of the child domains there exists an Exchange 2003 server. I want to install the Exchange 2010 server in the forest root domain then migrate the users' mailboxes over to it. Is there anything out of the ordinary that I need to take into consideration in order to accomplish this? Thanks in advance

Greetings, That is a difficult question to answer because the term "out of the ordinary" may mean something completely different to each Exchange admin. However, I believe I have your answer. The Exchange Team has a great new tool called the Deployment Assistant. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exdeploy2010/default.aspx#Home You click what you are trying to do and answer a few questions and it spits out all the steps. Hope that helps. J. Peter Bruzzese Triple-MCSE, MCT, MCITP:Messaging ExclusivelyExchange.com

Hi J. Peter Bruzzese, Thanks for the link! I have used the tool in the past, but I was looking for some logical reasoning in the design of the forest. I have read that you can place Exchange 2010 anywhere in the forest, so does it matter which domain Exchange 2010 is running in compared to the location of Exchange 2003? Thanks Larry

Greetings, I see what you are saying. You have an Exchange 2003 server in one domain but you want to add the Exchange 2010 on a server in another domain. Interesting. Are they in different sites too? How are you structured? Here is a link regarding AD site structure for Exchange 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996299.aspx I went through this AD Prep link too (trying to look for something specific that will give you peace of mind) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspx I haven't tried this... that is my little disclaimer... but my assumption is that your AD domain structure wont be an issue so long as you complete the prep work for AD and follow the guidelines in that second link. Here are some Exchange 2003/2010 specific links: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638130.aspx and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998186.aspx I'm sure you can do your own research, so these may not be very helpful. Two persons searching are better than one sometimes. From what I'm seeing we are only worried about installing within the same organization, so the domain itself shouldn't matter if you make sure the AD is prepared. If that is incorrect, I hope a moderator stumbles across this soon. J. Peter

This should be OK. If you have multiple routing groups in the 2003 environment you'll want to do some reading on interop in this space. You'll also want to collocate DCs from child domains in the same datacenter as the 2010 environment to make GAL updates and such go smoothly.Active Directory, 4th Edition - www.briandesmond.com/ad4/

They are in the same site. I had all of the domains and forest properly prepared, but ran into a permissions issue when trying to move the mailboxes from 2003 to 2010. It looks as if the Exchange Enterprise and Domain groups had incorrect permissions, but I have them set up correctly.

Just curious... which tool did you use to try and move them? If you try from the 2003 side you will have issues and it wont work. Did you try it from the 2010 side? Did you use the EMC or EMS? J. Peter

I used the EMC.

Hi, What is the detail error information? Please try to use get-mailboxdatabase |get-adpermission -user administrator to see what permission has been granted to administrator on database. Regards, Xiu

It seems that the Exhcnage 2003 and 2010 computer accounts were missing in the Exchange Domain and Exchange Enterprise groups. Now that that is restored it is working. Thanks! Larry
