Transition from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 and blackberry and iphone during co-existence period
Hello,We are planning to Transition from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 single server, we currently support Blackberry and iphone. We will be installing Exchange 2007 as additional server into the Exchange organization but will not move the mailboxes to the Exchange 2007 for a short period of time until we are ready to configure our Cisco Unity Integerated messaging. My question is during this co-existense period does will Blackberry and iphone users still be able to get their e-mail and calendars. Does the Exchange 2007 affect the mail flow in any way? should I be configuring anything other than the routing group that is automatically created. Thanks for your help.

You are the one that decide how this can affect your system:if you install exch 2007 on an additional server and stop, probably you'll have no problem (if nothing of the upgraded Exchange schema is in conflict with your third party applications that manages iphones and blackberry, but take a look at the authorization and schemachangesthat it will do for having no surprises you cal look here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997467.aspx).If you aren't going to change firewall rules nor move mailboxes to the new server, probably it'll continue working perfectly...HTHDiego Castelli

That depends on how you route your OWA/Active Sync Traffic. BlackBerry uses its own little database and connection to the mailbox server so if users remain on Exchange 2003 that BES won't be a problem. If you point ActiveSync/OWA to the new Exchagne 2007 users there shoudl be no problem since the CAS will redirect the users to the Exchange 2003 BE server. You may have to disable SSL on the BE exchange 2003 server though. But if you continue to point users to the Exchange 2003 instance then nothing will change and you won't have any problems until you're ready to go to Exchange 2007 which then, you really shouldn't ahve any problems.Make sense?SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS: MOSS 2007, OCS 2007, Exchange 2007

Thank you so much for the feedback, just need a little clarification for ActiveSync, I will be installing a certificate on Exchange 2007 also for secure access, I will continue to point users to the Exchange 2003 during short co-existence. That should not affect users iphone or OWA, right?

Hi, If the Mobile Device or OWA still connects to Exchange Server directly, I believe that it will not affect users IPhone or OWA. Yes, your cert will go on your CAS server for OWA and ActiveSync. You can direct all web traffic to the CAS server(s) and the CAS server will redirect them to the proper mailbox server. Typically the best way to go in a transition is to deploy the CAS server first, move your SSL certificates from your old Exchange 2003 FE server to the CAS server and then point your OWA/ActiveSync to the new CAS server. I've never had a problem with this type of deployment. What you can do is test the connection by using host files. Deploy your CAS, setup a host file on your computer and tell it to go to the IP address of the CAS server with your host name (http://www.measureup.com/testobjects/MS_TCPIP4/5a7ebf6.htm). This will give you a great way to test owa connectivity. SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS: MOSS 2007, OCS 2007, Exchange 2007
