Transaction log inflation during quest migration, Exchange 2007
Hi guys, Sorry to be on here again today, but a colleague of mine has just this moment gone on holiday and I have had to field a question regarding a large migration into Exchange. I am of the opinion that a Quest Tool migration from another environment and into my Echange servers, has the same impact on the transaction logs as does a standard Mailbox move i.e. it inflates. Now without testing this I cannot be absolutely certain as the "theory" has escaped my mind, but I am telling the "migrators" to do their migrations in smaller chunks than the 1000 they intend to do tonight (Principally because it seems we were expecting the chunks to be 200 or so in size over a week, hence why there was probably no concern over log file disk sizes). Am i right in that the migration of email into an Echange mailbox using this Quest tool would behave in the same fashion as would a normal Exchange mailbox move?| Tom

Yes....as it copies messages into the mailbox a transaction log is being created and filled up. Doesnt matter if that copy is done by a mailbox move or a 3rd party migration tool. running backups is the only way to keep those clear. Makes the process slower but it has to be done if you can't create a larger disk for the room needed. Old school methods was to turn on circular logging but leaves you very vunerable during a migration and could cause huge losses of data is something goes wrong.

Great stuff Chris, I walked home and was working out the transaction log logic and came up with pretty much what you have told me. Thank you for that. Tom
