Thinking of setting up Exchange Server 2010 - a few questions
Hi, in our organisation we have only a relatively small number of computers (about 20) and a few phones and devices. Currently, we are using workgroup-based networking: each user has their own machine (or two) which they use exclusively. But as the number of devices that each user uses increases, it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep them all in sync - for example, it wouldn't be unusual for a user to have a laptop, desktop, and phone which need to have mail/contacts/calendar/etc. kept in sync. So we're considering moving to Exchange which (I as I understand it) should provide a solution for this issue. But I'm almost entirely unfamiliar with Exchange and its workings, and what's required to set it up. I'm wondering whether anybody here can provide general advice about the steps we would have to take to migrate to Exchange. I also have a couple of more specific questions: 1) We are currently using workgroup-based networking. Will this have to change? I have heard we will have to set up Active Directory - how is Active Directory different, and how is it related (if at all) to domain-based networking? 2) I am unfamiliar with the relationship between Exchange, Active Directory, Domans, and Roaming User Profiles. So this may be a corollary to the previous question: does Exchange require roaming user profiles? We are currently quite happy with the way users are set up at present - each user has their own computer and all user data is stored locally on their computer. As I understand it, roaming user profiles would store user settings and data remotely, which would be a hassle and an undue burden on our network. 3) Are there any other helpful resources I should look at?

If you don't currently have Active Directory and you're completely new to Exchange, I'm wondering whether you have any scope to get an external consultant in to help you initially; these are big topics that you might need face-to-face help with.Neil Hobson, Exchange MVP
