More information is required. Is this an already existing 2007 server with other roles (mailbox, hub, cas) on it? The Edge server is a specific role, and if you are going to install it, it is the only role that can exist on that machine. Post some additional details of what you are trying to do, and we can help you with a potential solution.

Thanks for the quick response. This is a newly installed Windows 2003 Server X64, with Exchange Server 2007. It is my domain controller, DNS Server, and installed Exchange 2007 on it yesterday, I created a single mailbox, and setup my DNS to resolve to this system andhad my MX records configured to point to its IP. It also has my Server Hub Role, and Client access configured on it. I only have the one server. I wanted to be able to configure it as my Exchange 2007 server. I also have 2 other computers joined to my domain they are both Windows Vista. One is Vista Business x86 and the other is Vista Ultimate x64.

After doing some additional research, I've discovered there is simply no way to make Exchange Server 2007 a self-contained Email server like 2003. I'll just have to wait until I get the chance to build another machine that I can setup for the Edge Transport. Thanks for the help. Consider this thread closed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "no way to make Exchange 2007 a self-contained email server like 2003". Please elaborate. What exactly are you not able to do? You can install the anti-spam agents on a Hub Transport server to get most of the functionality of the Edge role, but I think you are missing the point of what an Edge server is designed to do. You need to compare the Edge role to other 3rd party SMTP gateway servers. Do you need it to have a fully functioning Exchange 2007 environment? No. Does it help provide better message hygiene than just a HT role? Yes. Again - please state specifically what you are trying to do, and are having problems doing. The additional information you provided doesn't share any details of any problems you are experiencing. I suspect that one problem you might have is that the Hub isn't set up to receive anonymous mail from the Internet by default, but this can be easily configured by modifying the default Receive connector.

Well, when I tried twice to get my exchange 2007 server configured, I could not send or receive email, and in reading the documentation. I was under the impression that the edge transport is the connection for exchange to the outside world. I couldn't install the Edge Transport option via the setup since I'd already installed other Exchange roles on this server. Thanks for the insight in to the receieve connector. I'll look into that. "Specifically" the problem I am having, is that I couldn't send or recieve email, the documentation says that the Edge Transport is the "internet facing" connection. I couldn't create a Edge Subscription File, then I discovered that I couldn't install the Edge Transport Role on the same server. I only have the one system at this point that I can dedicate as Domain Controller/Exchange Server. I did it with Exchange 2003 and thought I could do it with Exchange 2007 as well.

Take a look at the following articles. They should help you get this working. Thanks Ben. It's amazing what I can read when I'm told where to look...lol. I've visited the pages you listed, but didn't "read" them. Now that I have the capability to send and recieve email via Exchange 2007 on a single server, I get the following error in my Oulook 2007. 22:22:37 Synchronizer Version 12.0.4518 22:22:37 Synchronizing Mailbox 'Localuser' 22:22:37 Synchronizing Hierarchy 22:22:37 1 folder(s) updated in online store 22:22:37 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Calendar' 22:22:37 Downloading from server 'mydomain.com' 22:22:37 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Contacts' 22:22:37 Downloading from server 'mydomain.com' 22:22:37 Done 22:22:46 Microsoft Exchange offline address book 22:22:46 0X80190194 I also have connected my Samsung Blackjack to my Exchange Server and get the following error: Synchronization could not be completed. Try again later. Thanks in advance for the prompt help.
