I have a clean machine build and I am trying to install Exch 2K7 RTM. I have done this a few times - and this error is a first. The machine is a AMD Athlon 64 3200 - 2GB RAM. Windows 2K3 SP1 installed. IIS Enabled Framework 2.x, MMC, and PowerShell pre-requisites are installed. When I launch the Exchange Setup - get to the Exchange Server 2007 Setup - Introduction - and click Next - I get the error: The Exchange Server is in an inconsistent state. Only disaster recovery mode is available. Any feedback / help would be GREAT. Thanks...

I am experiencing the same problem. I've followed all pre-requisites and at one time it started working after I installed DNS on the server. Once I stopped receiving the error, I selected the "typical role" install and it begin another pre-requisites check and recommended several patch updates. After updating what was recommended, I begin to receive the error once again.

Has anyone seen a resolution to this problem? UPDATE****OK here is how I fixed my problem. This problem seems to relate back to the AD. If you have installed Exchange 2k7 previous then the AD contains information about the Exchange server that must be removed. I deleted the 2 MS Exchange containers in the AD Users and Settings.Then found a folder ExchangeSetupLogs and a file in there should be ExchangeSetup.log. Opening this file you should see line likeExchange Configuration Container for the Organization is....Exchange Organization Container for the Organization is.....This means it found it's self in the AD. I then went to the Domain Controller and ran ADSIEDIT.MSC. Under Configuration --> CN=Configuration -->CN=Services You should see CN=Microsoft Exchange. All I did was remove this entire entry and everything underneath it. The install works fine now.Hope this helps.

I have the same issue, however, AD coexists with Exchange Server 2003. I'm concerned if I remove the CN=Exchange Servers object, it may render my Exchange Server 2003 environment inconsistent or inaccessable.

I was in the same situation, given a 2003 exchange (prod.) and a down 2007 and unable to install. Go into asdiedit.msc....open cn = microsoft exchange, then look in cn=connections. Simply delete the entry that shows the name of the offline server. Reboot your machine/close exchange setup and you should be able to install... worked for me. Good luck! Chris MCSE 2003

Additional Steps!!! See article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937358 After completion, run the adprep commands again... setup /prepareschema and setup /preparead. Run GUI install after this.

Hey Chris, this is Rich. No love on the sp1 install, man. I'm getting this error now. Never got it the first time around or during RTM. This didn't work for me. Just an FYI... you should call me some time. So far I've done an DSRM restore of the AD on the DC (alphabet soup), everything in this thread. Still kicking my ***. It's 1:32 AM, and no end in sight. I guess it's ok since exchange IS running, but the tools have not installed and it never finished properly. It just failed and now won't start back up so that I can finish properly, and you know me man, I can't just let it go.. Ugh. IT is the life, eh? Rich

John, I am having the same issue as you. I have an existing Exchange 2003 Server. Added a 2007 server and then rebuilt the machine. When attempting to reinstall Exchange 2007 I get error message as noted above. There have been several recommendations here. But did you determine specifically which AD entries could / should be removed so as not to disable your Exchange 2003 environment? It appears that the only record specific to the new server is the new Administrative group called "CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)". Can I safely remove this group. Are there other records I should remove? Thanks very much for any assistance... Keith

Not sure if this helps, but I found this : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc411332(EXCHG.80).aspx It states that it is the server object that must be deleted from ASDIEdit, and the entry removed from the relavent MSExchange groups. I had the issue with re-installing Exchange 2007 in my VM environment at home. I found this thread and the KB article above. Both seem to do the same thing, although the article explains exactly what needs to be removed to allow an installation to occur. Good Luck. Adrian

By mistake, I deleted the entries of CN=Microsoft Exchange from my domain controller. I have bunch of machnies which had exchnage installed to that ACtive directory, now none of my machines which had exchnage is working. When I launch Exchange system Manager, it displays "There is no such object on the server" facility: win 32 Id no: c0072030 Exchange System Manager I have several machines which had exchange on it and I am not able to work on any of them. Can some oneplease help me?

Never ever setup Exchange 2007 with server 2008 R2, it will only work smoothly with Server 2008 std! had to go thru all the fail setups/Un-install and then some! if your on R2 versions of Servers, better to stick to Server 2003 R2 and save yourself the troubles!
