Tasks Saved In PST File vs Hard Disk
I'm using O2010.

I create task and then save the task to my hard drive and create hyperlinks to the MSG files in my calendar. That is all working OK.

My question is when I open a MSG file (Task), sometimes the save MSG file is saved in my task  folder (in the PST file), sometimes it is saved on my hard drive. If saved in my PST file, I simply drag it over to my hard drive. I'm just trying to determine when and why Outlook decides to save the MSG file to the file on my hard drive vs in the PST file.

All of my task MSG files are saved on my hard disk and there are zero in my task folder.

Thank you.

Hi,

We are used to having emails, tasks and some other items stored in pst file. Also, we can store these items in local drive.

Although storing in local drive might seem unexpected at first, it does offer quite a few benefits:

1. View these items using Windows Explorer without running Outlook.

2. Easily make these items linked to Calendar or something else.

3. Easily share these items with other people while pst file can just be opened by one instance of Outlook at a time.

4. Avoid losing items due to pst corruption.

5. Reduce the pst file size.

6. Easily move messages and other items between computers.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Steve:

Thanks for the email and feedback.

Let me explain my question again as I can see maybe it wasn't very clear.

I currently have zero items saved in my tasks folder in my PST file. If I need a new task, I create and then save it on my hard drive (not in the PST file).

When I need to open the task, I open the MSG file, make changes and save it. That is where I have my question. Sometimes when I save it, the MSG file on my hard drive gets updated. However, sometimes when I save it, the Task appears and is saved in my PST file.

What I don't know if why it works differently form one time to another. One time I save it and it appears in my PST file and other time it appears to update the on my hard drive.

I have also noticed that sometimes (without even saving the Task), just editing the task causes it to appear in my Task folder in my PST file.

Hi Shawn,

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Now, I know more about this issue. Thank you for your update.

I have tested this issue in my Outlook 2013 account which is based on Exchange. I created a task and saved it to the local drive. Then, I made changes and save it, but I couldnt reproduce the issue you mentioned.

Which account type are you using?

Do you set pst file as default delivery? Maybe it has something to do with the issue.

Regards.

Thanks for the email.

We do not use Exchange. We use Google to send / receive emails.

I have both a Google created PST file and my local PST file. My emails come into / send using my Google PST file which is also my default data file.

Even if I change my default data file to be my local PST file, that same issue happens. I tested it using either as my default delivery.

It is very random. For example, this morning I opened a task, added a file, saved it, and it saved to my hard drive. I then opened another task and added a letter in the notes. At that point (without saving), the task appeared in my Google PST file. When I saved it, it was updated in tasks in my PST file, not on my hard disk.

All the tasks were created and updated in my local PST file.

I cannot determine when and why it happens.

Hi Shawn,

Please try to create a new pst file and set it as default, and then test the issue, will the problem reoccur?

Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings, click on Data Files tab, click Add to create a new pst file, then click Set as Default. Restart Outlook and create a new task to test the issue.

Please feel free to let me know the result.

Thanks.

Steve:

Thanks for the idea, but no luck. The tasks appeared in the new PST file. Again, it is random.

I do have a separate PST file where I do copy in Tasks and Contacts to run SCANPST against them. Still, no luck after running SCANPST.

However, I did notice one task (one I ran SCANPST against) always ends up being saved in the Tasks folder in the PST file. I created a new task, copied in the data in the notes, saved it and did the same steps. Still no luck.

There has to be something I'm missing.
