Taking forever to open, Word, Excel and Access documents from Networks and / or from Internet

Hi guys,

I recently migrated our school to Windows 7 and Office 2010. (Our File Servers, DCs are running Server 2012 R2 if this has any bearing on what I'm about to ask)

We have a problem that affects all machines where if you open a document from a shared network drive or you open a document from a email attachment, or a document from the Internet it can take up to five minutes to open.

This is incredibly frustrating. I read some posts that indicated that if you install the Office 2010 File Validation tool it can sometimes fix it, no such luck here. I have also gone into 'Trusted Locations' and ticked the box that allows trusts documents on my network.

Any ideas? I have searched quite a bit and would appreciate some help.

This is an error that appears in the event log:

"The program WINWORD.EXE version 14.0.4762.1000 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

 Report Id: "

Hi George,

This is an often issue and caused by different reasons. With your error event log I can get less information about your issue, I suppose you could read these articles and try the methods they provided.

And the issue also might be related to Internet Explorer performing a search of network drives and your local area network and any disconnected network drives or LAN search issues will hang the loading of your Excel spreadsheet. Here is how to stop Excel 2010 from browsing your LAN / Network drives when you open an Excel spreadsheet on your local hard drive:

  1. Start Internet Explorer
  2. Go to "Tools" menu
  3. Go to "Internet Options"
  4. Go to "Security" tab
  5. Go to "Local Intranet"
  6. Click on "Sites" button
  7. Uncheck "Automatically detect intranet network"

Hope its helpful.
