Sync issue
Hi, The issue that we are facing is that we are continuously getting sync issue for all the Exchange 2003 user connected to one of our Server. Particular reason to post this in newgroup is many users are getting close to 20 Sync Logs every hour which is quit high. Steps taken to mitigate this issue are :- For Windows Vista & 7 OS. Step 1: Disable the Outlook Send/Receive setting. To disable the Outlook Send/Receive settings, click Send/Receive on the Tools menu, click Send/Receive Settings, and then click to remove the Disable Scheduled Send/Receive check box. Step 2: Disabling “autotuninglevel” & “rss” from command prompt 'netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled' 'netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled' Apart from this I have even checked the “EFORM REGISTRY” setting also from Exchange server side and all looks good. we have to even tried installing the below mentioned hotfix for Microsoft on Exchange server http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=916625&kbln=en-us For Windows XP OS ( Most of the laptops are running with Windows XP & Outlook 2003 Only) Tuning Cached Exchange Mode synchronization timing To provide a good balance between usability and network efficiency, the timing of synchronization communications between Outlook 2003 and Exchange Server 2003 has been optimized by using synchronization timers. You can change these synchronization timer values by creating and by modifying the following registry keys and values under : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Cached Mode Registry key: Upload=dword:0000000f (default is 15 seconds). Download=dword:0000001e (default is 30 seconds) Maximum=dword:0000003c (default is 60 seconds) (Keep this value) By default, whenever the client is in Cached Exchange Mode and a user makes a local change, the Upload timer starts. Changes have the following effects: If a local change occurs during the 15-second window of the Upload timer, the Upload timer restarts. If no other local changes before the 15-second window expires, the data is synchronized to the server. If changes continue to occur before the 15-second window expires, all changes are synchronized to the Exchange Server computer after one minute. There is no additional delay. When the Exchange Server computer notifies Outlook 2003 of a change, the Download timer starts. Outlook delays receiving the change information. This behavior reduces server load and improves network performance, because Outlook is frequently notified of multiple server changes in quick succession. All notifications that occur in the 30-second window of the Download timer are grouped together, and then they are processed at the end of the timer. The timer is then reset to wait for the next server notification. When a new mail notification is received, Outlook 2003 synchronizes folders where new or changed items reside. Unread counts are updated, and then any rules are processed. Source Article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870926 After doing all this still issue persists. Looking forward for your valuable suggestion.

Hi, First, I would like to confirm the following questions: 1. What’s the meaning about “getting close to 20 sync logs every hour”? Is it an event log in client machine? Or it just get 20 synced messages? 2. Does the sync log occur after posting a new message to a newsgroup public folder as the KB916625 mentioned? 3. Does the user have any problem to receive and send messages via Outlook? Meanwhile, please post the detail sync log here for research. Thanks. Hi Novak, Sorry for the delay. 1. What’s the meaning about “getting close to 20 sync logs every hour”? Is it an event log in client machine? Or it just get 20 synced messages? It is 20 Sync Messages in Outlook “Sync Issues” Folder. 2. Does the sync log occur after posting a new message to a newsgroup public folder as the KB916625 mentioned? No, user is not using newsgroup. Just normal emails 3. Does the user have any problem to receive and send messages via Outlook? No, Send/Receive of email works perfectly fine. Thanks and Regards, Vinu Kumar T K

Hi, What’s the detail log in the Sync Issues folder? Could you post some of them here for research? As you mentioned that all Exchange 2003 users encounter the same problem, are the logs are the same in each user mailbox? Before going further, I recommend you refer to the following article about the detail information of Synchronization error folders. Based on my research, Outlook will skip and log any bad items or malformed items on the server, and then Outlook 2003 continues to synchronize correctly. If there is no mail flow problem, we usually need not check the logs in the folder. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/synchronization-error-folders-HP001040042.aspx Items get placed in the sync issues folders when there are problems syncing in cached mode - by changing the profile to online mode, the behavior shouldn't re-occur with respect to the Sync Issues folders. It is difficult to say why the item was placed into the folder, and changing the profile to online mode may expose issues with connectivity between the user's location and the exchange server. It may be that an anti-virus program or the third party add-in corrupted the message, prompting placement into the sync issues folder. At this stage, I suggest you run Outlook in Safe Mode for a test. For more information, please refer to the following article: Description of Outlook 2003 with Cached Exchange Mode in an Exchange Server 2003 environment http://support.microsoft.com/KB/870926/EN-US Run Outlook in Safe mode ========================= The Safe Mode will disable all add-ins or extensions that will not start, or a corrupted resource, file, registry, or templates. Click Start->Run, Type "Outlook /Safe" (Without quotation marks and there is a space between "Outlook" and "/Safe") and press Enter. Does the problem occur in Outlook Safe mode? If the problem doesn't occur this time, please select Tools->Trust Center-> Add-In Tab -> COM Add-ins and click GO. Then clear all the checkboxes, add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart Outlook, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it. (NOTE: Maybe some of them cannot be unmarked, if there is, please bypass them) Hope this helps. Hi Novak, We have tried all the step mentioned by you. These are the logs that we are getting in outlook, and it is ben identified that if the outlook is opned the online mode then we are not getting any of the Sync Logs errors, means if the outlook is configured in Online Mode there wont be any Sync Logs generation. Attached Sync logs are getting generated only when outlook is configured in casched mode. Please provide me you email ID so i can send you the Sync Logs in your email id. i am not able to attach the logs here on this webpage. Thanks, VinuThanks & Regards, Vinu Kumar T K
