Support for Windows Server 2012 R2?

Hi,

Does Exchange 2013 supports Windows Server 2012 R2? Will there be another problem to upgrade Exchange 2013 installed on Windows Server 2012

Hi,
Currently, there is no support for Windows Server 2012 R2.
Rhoderick Milne has written a good blog post about it that is a good read.

See: Exchange Support For Windows Server 2012 R2

Just as with Exchange 2007 and later, I don't think we will see support for an OS Upgrade, so in other words, do expect that you will need to do a new clean install of Exchange 2013 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Thank you.

Then it is advisable not to perform any upgrade from Windows Server 2012 to R2 which already has the Exchange 2013 runing.

Yes, in-place upgrades aren't supported for Exchange servers. Only supported path is to install new machine with Windows 2012 R2 and migrate resources. But you should do it only when it will be officially supported.

Hi Jackson,

Windows Server 2012 R2 will be supported in a future version of Exchange 2013. However, Windows Server 2012 Standard or Datacenter is fully supported in Exchange 2013.

Please refer to the link below to check Exchange 2013 System Requirements:

That is useful information.

Does it mean we will have to upgrade to later version of Exchange 2013, before an in place upgrade to R2 can be done?

Hope such a scenario won't cause any issue?

No. In-place upgrades aren't possible with Exchange. Also you will not need to upgrade Exchange before Windows 2012 R2 installation. You will have to install new Exchange 2013 server on new Windows 2012 R2 machine and then migrate all resources from old Windows 2012 (without R2) server.

Once again: Exchange 2013 installed on Windows 2008R2/2012 cannot be in-place upgraded to Windows 2012 R2. Only migration to new hardware is supported.

Hope it helps you,

Robert

That is sad.

But as long as Exchange 2013 is supported with updates on Windows server 2012, that should be fine.
