Store mailboxes and deleting AD user accounts Exchange 2007
We're running SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007. Since we are limited in the number of user accounts we can have in SBS, we would like to be able to remove them while simultaneously retaining the mailbox and its emails in case we need them in the future. My first thought was to create an accounts called "Old Accounts" with an associated AD user account, and forward all the emails to it. Then delete the users AD account and Exchange mailbox. Is this the best route or does someone have a better suggestion?

You are not limited on the number of accounts you can have in SBS. That is incorrect. You can have 100s of accounts if you want - SBS is licenced per seat, not per account. Mailbox = account. Therefore if you want the email address to stay active then the account has to stay active. The usual method for retaining old data is to export the content to a PST file. If you want to retain them in a mailbox for easier access then yes create an account that is mailbox enable. But instead of forwarding the messages you would want to look into using the Import-Mailbox cmdlet in the Exchange PowerShell. You can Export the mailbox and place them into folders in the Archieved mailbox. I would use the user's Mailbox names to keep each of their mail separate including the original folder structure. If you want to keep them of the Mailbox Database and you are runing Exchange 2007 SP1 or Higher then the Export-Mailbox also allows your to Export to PST files. Here is a MS Article on the Import-Mailbox with synatx examples: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb266964(EXCHG.80).aspx Make sure you read the entire article to find your best options and note the part that you will need to grant fullaccess rights to the account you are using to each mailbox account. Confirm your data is in the Mailbox Archive before deleting mailboxes or make sure you have an archive backup of the database. CarlosCarlos
