Storage Issues with Exchange due to Index Files

Hi there,

We have been having some issues over the last few weeks with regards to our Exchange Server and it running low on space.

The drive where we have the 3 main databases saved on has a total of 1624GB and there is only 24GB of storage left as I type but it goes down at a frantic speed. This is because of the index files. When we turn off the Search feature in Exchange and delete the index files it works fine but when we then put the search service back online the space starts to disappear again and we have do remove the index files again to recover space so that we can keep exchange online.

Unfortunatly we cant add any more storage space to the existing drive so there is no way to expand this drive through Hyper-V or I would do it that way and solve the issue.

I have also created another drive and I was going to move the database path of one of the databases but when i do this it takes most of the night and then crashes the exchange server.

We really need a solution to this because at the moment we are having to go in and backup the index files every day and then delete them from exchange every day now.

If anyone has any ideas on how we can fix this issue that would be great as I fear we are getting to a stage where we may loose exchange soon.

Thanks,

David

So you have a few options

1. I would turn off indexing for now since your just chasing your tail by deleting, letting it recreate and deleting it again.  True nothing will be indexed until you turn it back on, but until you solve the disk space issue your just going to go round and round

2. Have your backups been completing and truncating your log files nightly?  If unknown look into the Log path and see A: how many logs are present and B: whats the oldest Log date?

3. Interesting that the DB move crashes, so A: how big is the DB your trying to move and how many mailboxes are within that DB and B: when you did the move whens the last good backup you made and again how many logs are present and how old is it? Lastly when that crash happens what do the System and Event logs show in terms of what was happening right before the crash?

4. The other option would be to create a new DB on the new drive and then A: move all the mailboxes from the existing DB into the new one and then B: removing the existing DB after all moves are done.

That said please answer the above questions and I can give you additional feedback
