Storage Design for Exchange 2007
Hi All, I used Exchange 2007 Mbx Storage Calculator v17.6 I have 3500 users with moderate usage with each 2GB mailboxes It sums up to 28 storage group with 12TB on single site.Thats 28 DB and 28 storage groups. 24TB for replica (CCR) However my current environment only used up to 4.4 TB on single site (on Exchange 2003) Q1. Is it realistic for 3500 users to have 28 storage group Q2. Is it best practice to have 1 Storage Group per LUN? Q3. There is almost 3 times based on our existing size 4TB ->12TB. DOes Exchange 2007 requires that much additional compare to Exchange 2003? A4. Is it best practice to have 1 DB per Storage Group?

Well, the sizing calculator gave you what it regards as the best offering for you. Since you have posted no details nobody can say whether 3500 users and 28 stores is right or not. But if the sizer told you so, its probably a good bet. 1. See sizer. 2. Yes. One database, one LUN. One log set, one LUN. When the sizer meets a set of parameters it starts lumping several log sets into one LUN. Again, follow the sizer. 3. I will guess that you have said no to a dedicated restore LUN so your sizer is probably allocating 100% extra space per LUN than necessary. Thats 4 to 8 straight away. It doesnt matter what the current storage is, you have punched numbers into the sizer and its given you the idea of what to use. 4. Yes, one store per group. Always. Really though, if you dont know much about Exchange you should either seek help from an outside consultant who can help you check your inputs or otherwise implement as per those inputs but double check them yourself. Hiya, The storage calculator is very good, so if you have entered accurate figures it should be fairly accurate. In answer to Q4 it's not a best practise for CCR SGs, it's a requirement. You can't have a SG with multiple DBs on CCR. You may get better value for money by considering Exchange 2010 instead though, as you may use the same or more storage, but will be able to take advantage of cheaper disks. Is there any reason for holding back and going for the old version? SteveSteve Goodman Check out my Blog for more Exchange info or find me on Twitter
