Still Having Issues with Online Defrag Exchange 2003 on SBS
I have read just about everything there is to read about it but I still can't seem to get Exchange to complete its online defrag. Or, maybe it does and I just don't know it. I am looking for the Event ID 1221 that is supposed to tell me online defrag completed with X amount of megbytes deleted from database. However, I never see it. I do see others such as 700, 702 and 703 about starting, resuming and completing a "pass." And 704 when there is an interruption. The other night I delayed the backup into business hours and scheduled the maint during a 10 hour overnight window and didn't make any apparent progress. What gives? I would like to do an offline defrag but don't want to until I am sure all unused items are deleted. (I did an offline defrag a week ago with a -2101 error at 95%: jet_errcallbackfailed) Is running isinteg prior to online defrag ok? Thanks Dean

HI Dean, You must be see event id 1221 which say white space in DB. I am preety sure it should be in SBS also. event id 1221 generate right after online houskeeping. I will not suggest you to go offlline defrag, you can move mailbox's in new DB to delete white spaces in DB .Anil MCC 2011,ITIL V3,MCSA 2003,MCTS 2010, My Blog : http://messagingschool.wordpress.com

Why do you want to do an offline defrag? That is not something that you MUST do and is not something that Microsoft recommends. If you are running out of space then as long as there is white space involved you will not have a problem. Do you see the event log entry at 5am (by default) that says the size of the database? If the process is being interrupted, then that is why you aren't getting 1221. What else is on the server? Run the SBS BPA against the server and the Exchange BPA and see what that flags and correct anything. I would be tempted to suggest that you set the maintenance windows back to default and then restart the information store service. I have been having serious performance issues that I traced to exchange The BPAs didn't reveal anything exciting. I attempted to dismount the store to verify that it was the cause of perf issues and it hung. After some footwork I was able to dismount it and server perf came back I ultimately moved the contents of mdbdata to a backup location and created a new store and started a mailbox restore process So now users can send and receive from temp db and read old data at backup site. It will probably take all night to do the restore. Hoping to create new Outlook profile for everyone when I come into office in am This is my first admin job with a production exchange server. I'm learning a lot with the help of MS support! Whew!

Hi Dean - Collabora. Glad to see you find a method to resolve the issue. Per your description, there is a performance issue with the server, did you check which process use the CPU/RAM more largely? If you confirm the issue cuased by the database, you could create a new database and move the mailboxes to the new database, it would not let you to do the restore. After moving all the mailboxes, you could delete the old database. Note any software backup the exchange database, if no, please use the ntbackup to do it. There is also a SBS forum, you could post the issue on that forum in the future. Regards! Gavin - cpu was only a few % total. Aside from IS usage, RAM utilization was acceptable after disabling the sbsmonitoring sql instance. There was a a high disk read and right queue. Server performance was fine after the dismount I think I used the wrong terminology. I am not doing a restore, but a recovery, along the lines you mentioned. Its taking forever!
