Some emails crash outlook 2010 when reading the email.
Hello, when i try to read some emails in outlook 2010 it crashes. it's only when I read the message but I think it only happens for a certain type of message but as i can't view the message i don't know what common denominator is involved.

I've got the same problem. The only commonality I can come up with is this: all the emails were sent to me through Mac email accounts. No idea how to "view" these emails. Everything I try (double-click to open; turn on the "preview pane"; "quick print") doesn't work except if I hit reply, the reply window opens and I can see the email text before it fades and the error message opens.

I too have the same problem ,  i'm getting crashing all the time , mainly when i first start Outlook ,  but also when i open emails ,   it doesn't seem stable any more ,  but it used to be ...
December 20th, 2009 11:40am

I guess there are only 3 people with this problem. Now, even when I hit reply to the emails that are problematic, the reply window doesn't open (it had previously and this at least allowed me to read the incoming message). When I open these problematic emails (what else do you call them?), Outlook  hiccups for a second or two and then opens a window "Microsoft Outlook has stopped working" with a green line running left to right as it supposedly looks for a solution. After finding no solution, it either closes Outlook and reopens it or it states "A problem caused the program to stop working properly ..." and I'm left to hit "Close Program." Oddly, and thankfully, only 2 people with whom I email have "problematic emails" that crash outlook when opening. Hopefully this problem doesn't expand. In the meantime I've reverted to the old "call em up on the phone" technique on a landline phone (so, presumably, MS hasn't gotten it's mitts into that).

Some additional trials that led nowhere, but may provide add'l insight to the problem. I've restarted Outlook and revised the "reading pane" layout several times. With no reading pane, the few problematic emails only show who they're from and the subject which remains boldfaced until I double click, at which point Outlook crashes (when I open Outlook up again, the sender and subject are still boldfaced as if they'd never been opened). If I don't double click, Outlook doesn't crash, but then I have no clue what the message says. If I have the reading panes available (right or bottom), Outlook crashes when I scroll to the problematic email (and the reading pane remains blank while Outlook crashes, so I still don't get to read the message). Could it be something in the message body from these people (trusted business contacts) that is sending Outlook 2010 into a tizzy?

Ok, made some progress -- a workaround to get all email to work. Opened Outlook 2010 in safe mode (went to Start, then at "Search programs and files" typed Run, hit enter, and when dialogue box opened, type outlook /safe [that the word outlook, then a space, then a slash and the word safe]. Outlook opened and I was able to view all emails that had previously caused Outlook to crash when I attempted to open/read them. I'm glad to finally have all email available. If I find the offending cause, I'll post again later.

9 hours later and the safe mode no longer is a workaround. Back to its old ways -- some emails, when I attempt to open them, cause Outlook to crash.
January 5th, 2010 12:15pm

More. I saw that MS Win 7 had an update this morning for Windows Defender. So, I restored to yesterday. Still cannot open the problematic emails. For the fun of it, I checked the "add-ins" (all of which I'd removed yesterday -- and I remember checking and seeing NO add-ins -- and when I then got things working). Now, there's an add-in "Microsoft VBA for Outlook Addin." When I go to remove it (Manage COM Add-ins, there's no button that allows removal of this particular add-in. Anyone know how to remove this?

Yeah.. I've been having the same issues along with a number of other folks on my site as well.  Few comments here: Outlook 2010 Crashing Reading Email

I've just been disabling the preview pane then replying to the email to read it.   Not very elegant but at least I can read the mail bombs...

Thanks, Mr. Groove. That trick worked for a few days, but since mid-last-week, it no longer works. I turn off the reading pane, hit reply on the problematic email, and Outlook crashes w/o any view of the email message. I think this is related to the conversation ____. If I could somehow disable conversation globally...

What I can't figure out -- why there's no solution. This is a big productivity issue.

Hi grsteffy, I am from the TechNet Singapore team. Thank you for your feeding in this matter.
Will need you to provide a direct feedback, if you haven't, to the Office 2010 Beta team.

Take notice at your Notification Area. You should see "Send a Smile / Send a Frown" icon. Click on send a frown while you have the error right in front of you.

Please send a direct feedback from the problem workstation and include a contact so the team could get back to you for more information if needed.

Thank you for testing Office 2010 Beta and helping shape software that are relevant and reliable when we release them.

Today, the previously problematic messages can be opened without crashing Outlook. Unaware of anything I might have done. Windows did an automatic update of Windows Defender Definition.

Today, I closed Outlook by mistake. Upon reopening, I find I can no longer open the problematic emails without crashing Outlook. However, I can hit reply without opening the problematic email and the reply window opens briefly before Outlook crashes (previously Outlook would crash immediately when I hit the reply button). I've purposely crashed Outlook many times today in an effort to get the problematic emails to open (thinking maybe there's some magic number of times Outlook must crash before somehow resetting itself so that the problematic emails can be opened without crashing -- but that didn't work).
January 13th, 2010 1:31am

Just to chime in - I am also having a lot of problems with Outlook 2010 Beta crashing when reading emails ~ so you are not the only one.      I thought the "smily face" program might be causing crashes so I deleted & no change --- just random freezes and restarts of Outlook as I try to go through my inbox.      At least I have another computer with earlier version of Outlook that I can fall back to.

Yesterday or maybe the day before I was again able to open the problematic emails. The only thing I recall doing was updating Adobe Acrobat 9 and, once that completed, I then discovered WordPerfect would not print to PDF. So, I then "repaired" Adobe Acrobat 9 and WP printed to PDF. Soon after, I realized I could open the problematic emails in Outlook 2010. Could these be connected? I now also recall several weeks ago reworking a line in registry which was supposed to allow PDF previewer in Win 7. In any event, today Win 7 installed new updates and now asks me to restart the computer -- which, of course, I don't want to do. After each previous restart in recent history, I've no longer been able to open the problematic emails in Outlook 2010. But, I supposed I've no choice. Here goes.

So, after a few more Outlook crashes, I open Outlook and go about work in other apps. Just now, go back to Outlook, check mail, and for the heck of it decide to try to open the problematic emails. They now open! Sounds/seems maddening, but thought I should report it.

No resolution to report, just an update on Outlook's travails. I had my system running for about 5 days during which time NO outlook issues whatsoever. Even the problematic emails could be opened and did not cause Outlook to crash. last night, overnight, my machine crashed apparently because on waking the machine this morning I got the "Windows did not close properly" screen. Alas, now that I'm up and running again, Outlook is back to its old ways. Cannot open problematic emails (outlook crashes). View panes seem unstable (or maybe help cause the problematic email problem). Last Win 7 update was on Monday, February 1st (I don't recall restarting machine after that update, but I might've had to -- definitely for Monday and Tuesday Outlook was perfect).
February 3rd, 2010 12:12pm

If you signed up for the auto updates then that might be partly why.  MS came out about a week ago with an update to correct a problem Outlook was having with opening large emails.

Thanks, Scott. I'm signed up, but only see Win 7 and IE8 updates (plus the usual defender updates). But maybe that was it. Yesterday, for a few hours, I again had the Outlook problem (crashing when attempting to open emails from just a select few people), but today all's well again. Hopefully it's stabilized.
February 4th, 2010 12:01pm

Another possiable problem could be is if you did not do a "clean" install.  It's not  wise to be running both Outlook 07 and 10, and not expect your computer not to get cranky.

Same problem, crash consistantly when trying to click-to-open a second email. The first one always opened. Worked okay in safe mode so I disabled the addins and that took care of the problem. Seem that I don't need any of them but tomorrow I'll try each on to find the problem one.
February 6th, 2010 2:41am

Right. Mine was a clean install on a SSD. Installed Win7 first then Office 2010 beta. All worked well for a time, but soon had just one email that would crash outlook when I tried to open it. Then another, then another, (from different senders) but it seemed to stabilize at 5 or 6 different senders -- so the majority worked, but this pesky patch of 5 or 6 didn't. Did the safe mode thing and that worked for a day or two. Then, after that failed, did the "turned off add-ins" thing. That might've worked for a day. Most times, I thought this was related to the view/panes feature, but that's just a guess. Now, back to all add-ins on, view/panes enabled (right view pane) and running in standard mode. For the last three/four days, no problems, but I dread having to restart win 7 (I've been running nearly a week now -- it goes into sleep at night, comes out of it the next day just fine).

Please excuse me if you've already tried this, however this thread has gotten a little long.  I would try starting Outlook in Safe Mode, and then opening the offending emails.  I'm not thinking of the add-ins so much as maybe some rogue code inside of Outlook.  If this does not work Maybe Diane has some suggestions.  At the very least if you have not done it I would send a smile/frown to MS.
February 8th, 2010 5:46am

Thanks, Scott. I've tried that. Dennis Chung of Microsoft (see way above) had me send frowns (which I've done 4 or 5 times in the last few weeks). Since last Tuesday or so I've not had any issues (I've not closed down Win 7 or Outlook since then). If upon the next restart I have issues again, I'll post here and send in another frown.

I am having the same problem as everyone above - when I try to look at an email, outlook closes on me - whether I use the preview pane or not. I can't click reply to view the message, or simply double click it to open. Either way, it errors out and closes. I'm not sure what to do about this. Has anyone found a fix for the problem?
February 10th, 2010 11:51pm

I think there are more than 3 or 30 or 300 or .... you get the idea. I've read several blogs with lots of people having the same problem but no solutions. I guess we'll need to wait on MS.

I tried safe mode and that made no difference for me. It seems like the problem comes up on signatures (and maybe backgrounds) in specific emails. Not all emails are erroring for me, but most are.
This problem only came up when I moved to a new computer. I was running the program with no problem on another laptop. I'm not sure if any of this information helps, but I'll keep updating information here as I notice things.
February 11th, 2010 6:06pm

Observation from non-technical user: I have Outlook 2010 running on 2 machines. One installation is problem free. The second installation crashed every time I opened a message. The problem-free installation uses a "new" .pst file created at installation. The problematic installation uses a .pst file parsed from OL2000,2003,2007 to 2010. I now have a "new", empty .pst file apparently running properly on the problematic installation but it's only been a couple of days so perhaps too early to tell if the .pst file is the root cause of the crashing.

For the last nearly two weeks, no issues (I've not closed win7 or Outlook 2010). Windows updated yesterday and required a restart. Now, of course, Outlook crashes when attempting to open certain emails.

Riser -- what's involved in establishing a new pst file? Just rename the old one and then just start Outlook? Thanks.

<Start> <Control Panel> <Mail> <Data Files> choose the profile <Add> to get <My Outlook Data File(1).pst> located at \My Documents\Outlook Files, by default, or wherever you choose to locate it. Then go back to <Mail> choose the profile <data Files> <Add> <My Outlook Data File(1).pst> and <Default>. I have not tried to import mail and addresses from the "old" .pst file and will not unless I get about one week's stability from the new .pst file. As I said yesterday, I will post back with any further observations.

I'm having lots of crashes in Outlook email to the point of crashing about 2wice an hour or so.  I crash usually when I am making a new email or responding. I was using Office 2007 without any problems but now I'm kinda stuck with 2010 for the time being.  I have the 2007 disks at home so maybe I'll get them out and reinstall.

Has anyone had any luck or response from MS?  If you send them a frown is there any response?

Regret to report the "New" .pst file has not prevented the crashing. After three days without problems, OL 2010 crashed today opening a 2MB pdf attachment. Now it crashes all the time except, if I "reply" to an incoming message instead of trying to open it, I can read the message and OL does not crash.

Scott-SC: Thanks for the post. I tried the fix but it didn't help.

However I still have one installation working with no problem, no crashes, but 50% success rate does nothing for credibility. Will try a couple more things over the weekend but am getting frustrated with MS. Have been with OL since '97 and never experienced these kinds of problems before.

I just realized that I had also opened an archived PST file and it was still in Outlook 2010 on the restart after this morning's windows update and remained there after each crash. So, I just closed that PST and now can access the "bad" emails.

I've had no issue with bloated email sizes, so have not implemented the "fix."

When you send them a frown/smily face it does go to MS Office team, however from what I understand they don't directly respond, because no personal information is sent.  By send a frown/smiley face it does let the team know that there may be an issue that they need to look at.  I'm not saying send a response every time, however I would send it a few times, so that MS can realise that their is a possiable problem in the code, and the development team can fix it quicker, it's a win/win situation

I have the same problem on Vista Home Premium running Outlook on Office 12 (2007).  When I open an email message, it shows me the message and then kicks out the error "Microsoft Office Outlook has stopped working".  I've cleaned the database with Scanpst for the primary and archive data folder, and have noticed that is seems to corrupt the databases when the error occurs.  I've applied all available updates from Microsoft.  Problem still occurs when I open Outlook in Safe mode.  I also can forward or reply to messages and the error does not occur...only when I open a message to read.  If I turn on Auto Preview, I can see the first 3 lines, but still fails when I open a message.  If I turn on the Preview pane, it kills Outlook with the error...fortunately, when I restarte Outlook, it's smart enough to turn off the Preview pane for me, otherwise, I'd have a real problem.  I guess add me to the list of people who have the same problem.

This time around, maybe I should go in and remove any files that are still hanging around after i uninstall? Has anyone tried this already?

This is what worked for me with Windows 7 and Office 2010 Beta to get back to a "Clean", Office 2007. Never used Vista so the file locations may be a little different. The Windows 7 uninstall routine is not thorough and leaves intact many Office 2010 beta files, folders and about 150 registry entries. The following procedure involves editing the Windows registry which, if incorrect editing decisions are made, could subsequently prevent your computer from booting into Windows.

Make a complete backup of your Windows installation to an external drive/media; not differential or incremental but a complete system backup including system state, registry, bootstrap, etc. and make sure you have a boot media available (Windows install disk or if you use a proprietary backup software, make a boot cd.)

To uninstall Office: <Start> <Control Panel> <Programs and Features> single click on the Office program in the list <Uninstall> Follow the prompts. Reboot.

Locate the Outlook .pst files. In Windows 7 the default folder location is: C:\Users\Username\My Documents\My Outlook Files\ or you could just search your C: using <*.pst> as the filter. Delete everything in that folder except the .pst files and the extend.dat file.

Search your Office install drive (probably C:) for "Microsoft Office" (no quotes). Delete any files/folders found. (Watch for the .pst files in the search results and don't delete those).

Install a registry cleaner like "CCleaner" (free download) to make an initial purge of the registry; alternatively "jv16 Power Tools" which is not free but can be used on a trial basis for 30 days. Make sure you have the backup and boot cd mentioned above before you allow the registry cleaner to remove any keys or values. Purge the registry and reboot. If the registry has not been cleaned previously, the purge process may discover hundreds of registry entries related to left-over files from previous program installs, uninstalls, driver updates, etc. It's a safe bet to delete these but of course you should review the list of registry entries found before deleting anything. Takes a long time but the upside is once the registry is purged, computer performance increases noticeably. The possible downside is that if you delete a needed registry entry in error, your computer may not boot into Windows; that's why you need the full backup and boot media mentioned above.

I found that CCleaner and jv16 Power Tools did not remove all the Office keys/values in the registry but they largely reduced the time required to complete the next step which was a manual purge of the registry.

<Start> then type in the cmd box "Regedit" (no quotes) <Enter>. Once the registry editor opens, single click on <Computer> then: <Edit> <Find> and type "Microsoft Office" (no quotes) in the box then click <Find Next>. The editor will search for the requisite entries and when it finds one it will stop and allow you to delete it. Once deleted or if you decide not to delete, click <Find Next> or press F3 to find the next entry, and so on. In my case I found an additional 23 "Office" registry entries which CCleaner and jv16 did not find.

This process may also find remnants of earlier versions of Microsoft Office (if these were ever installed) e.g. Office 9 (2000), 10, 11, 12 (2007), which should be safe to delete.

After the purge is complete, reboot the computer and re-install "Office".

Thanks for the info, Riser. Did getting back to a clean install take care of the problem?
February 16th, 2010 12:05am

My original problem was with Outlook 2010 Beta and persistent crashing when trying to open e-mails. After several hours of experimentation I gave up trying to repair the installation, removed Office 2010 Beta as described in my post and re-installed Office 2007 which now works perfectly, including Outlook 2007. So I suppose the procedure was successful. OL 2007 is using the same .pst file that was used with OL2010 i.e. the crashing with OL 2010 appears not to have corrupted the .pst file. That was a pleasant surprise and a relief. Let's hope MS resolves the OL2010 issue before the RTM in June.

So I took another shot at installing Outlook 2010. After one week it appears to be stable. There have been many restarts during the past days and no crashes to report. What appears to have made the difference is the order in which the MS patch was applied.

MS  posted a message on the blog about this yesterday, maybe it will help.  http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/archive/2010/02/11/fix-for-message-size-issue-in-outlook-2010-beta.aspx

It was applied immediately after installing Office 2010, before opening any of the modules. Seems to have cured the issue.

I have the same issue.  3 people at work crash me anytime they send me an email and i try to open it.

I followed the link over to groovypost http://is.gd/90Ljc and mrgroove found that if you disconnect from the network, outlook won't crash.  I tried this out and it works.

Only problem with this fix is if I'm not connected to the network, how will I get NEW email....  Perhaps this will be a good tip for MSFT...??

It's quite a problem. From time to time, my Outlook behaves for a week or so at a time, until MS updates my machine and I've got to restart (which just happened Wednesday, so now my Outlook is crashing when attempting to open mail from certain senders). I've got Kapersky 2010 and had tried Outlook w Kapersky turned off. Made no difference.

I've been lurking here (and at other boards/blogs) watching others with exactly the same problem. I've tried all the proposed workarounds (safe mode/disabling add-ons/adding MS fix for large emails/etc.) Still no joy.

Whether I double click to open a mesage, or click and try to view in a reading pane, the system either restarts or asks to close. Always reloads fine -- many emails work -- some do not. When they fail to open, they reliably fail to open -- it's repeatable. Choosing Reply to view the message doesn't work for me -- that causes OL to restart also.

The other beta apps seem pretty solid. Not so (yet) for Outlook.

I'd love to see an update that addresses this problem -- before final release. Or a workaround. It's very frustrating.

Update -- the problem of some emails crashing is still occurring, but I have noticed a bit of a pattern. All of the failing emails are html format where I am part of a mass mailing. Not spam. For example, one of the failing emails today came from Wired. I regularly get their promo emails. This one will not open. This is true of all the failing emails I can remember since I installed the beta about a week ago. I have not had any failed email from friends, family, co-workers.

Although I have had a few mass htmls fail, most of my email crashes have come from business associates where there are only a few people on the distribution list (although now that I think about it, I can't say I've ever had an email addressed to only me with no distribution cause the crash). Some of my senders are known to use Mac. My "crashing sessions" come and go. Right now, I'm in crash mode. It'll go like this for a few days (or after 10 or 20 Outlook restarts) and then I'll be able to open all email from anyone anywhere.

GRSTeffey, can you post some additional details about your crashes here.  You're running Windows 7 right?  We'd love to know the Bucket ID for the crash reports.

  1. Start | type View Problem History in the search box | enter when it brings up the control panel application
  2. On the bottom of the window, click View problem reports and responses
  3. Scroll down to the hang or crash report that was sent in | double click the entry
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the report for the Bucket ID

For anybody else, we'd like to see this too - so if you've been clicking the "Send Info" button when you get the crash (PLEASE DO!) then post what the Bucket ID for the crash was and I'll make sure that gets to the product team.

In In Vista:

  1. Start | Run | wercon
  2. View Problem History
  3. Scroll down to the hang or crash report that was sent in | double click the entry
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the report for the Bucket ID
In Windows XP

  1. Start | type View Problem History in the search box | enter when it brings up the control panel application
  2. On the bottom of the window, click View problem reports and responses
  3. Scroll down to the hang or crash report that was sent in | double click the entry

Thanks Gary, I've forwarded that info along and the product team is looking into it more closely.

If anybody else has Bucket IDs on this crash please do post them here and I'll make sure the product team sees them. The more info we have the better!

And please DO keep clicking "Send Info" if you get a crash.  The bugs that get the most reports are the ones that tend to get prioritized and the more information they have on the bug the better the chances they have of finding it and fixing it.

Ben -- Something (maybe) to pass along. I discovered over the weekend what might be a workaround. When starting Outlook, rather than immediately trying to open emails (especially those from "problematic senders"), let the program sit for some time (I've not tested the length of time required, but it was several hours if not half a day). Or I could just be grasping at straws, but right now Outlook's working fine after that startup (and long period of inactivity prior to reading emails) on Saturday.

i agree with the time delay after waiting 1 hour it works. I have also noticed that outlook crash when i'm wirtting and email if I enter a space or a return but if i put a message with no space (no so easy to be understood without space :) ) no crash.

Problem has reoccurred and time delay did not resolve. Over the weekend I inadvertently closed Outlook. I restarted Outlook 2010 and did not attempt to open emails from problematic senders for a few days. This morning decided to open a recent and unopened email from a problematic sender and Outlook crashed. Tried scanpst.exe, but to no avail. Still no fix for this?

After an hour of opening/closing/crashing/starting-in-safe-mode Outlook, my last Outlook 2010 startup was in normal mode. I can now open the problematic emails. Go figure.

I have the same problem. I am not a programmer but I consider myself as an advanced Outlook user  :-)   but still can't find a solution to this problem.   Something definitely wrong and it is MS Outlook develeoper's job to rescue us.

Is there any patches fixes to Outlook 2010 Beta version?

I just downloaded the 2010 Beta. Only problem is the crashes reported above. Usually, but not always Outlook crashes and reloads quickly when I click reply but can happen when I try to load an attachment or when I add recipients. I am not a programmer but likely an advanced user. I have Windows 7 on an almost new dual core Dell Latitude laptop E6500. It has to be Outlook 2010 Beta since 2003 runs without a problem.

Just an update. Problem is recurring (still). For the last week all (finally) had settled and Outlook was able to open all emails without crashing. Today, Win7 update caused machine to reboot. Now, similar to previous conditions, Outlook crashes when I attempt to open/view emails from just a few (but always the same) senders. Of course, this always seems to happen at an inopportune time. I continue to send "frowns" when this occurs.

I am super busy these days - and had not found time to express my discontent with 2010 Beta.  AGH!  This issue is truly frustrating.  I am a serious Outlook user - and this is not acceptable.  I turned all of my co-workers away before they could try and install the beta.  Good thing too - as I would have been 'fixing' everyone's computers after.

I now save drafts of emails every few words.  Ridiculous.  Any new ideas out there?  I am only trialing BETA at home - good thing I work elsewhere.  Seriously - it is now to the point that I just use my phone to email from home.  AGH!

Machine rebooted yesterday. This morning I rec'd an Itunes receipt. Tried to open it, and Outlook crashed. Gets to a point I made near the beginning of this thread that I think the emails that cause crashing are from folks on Macs or using Mac email servers. In another few hours or few days, Outlook will probably "settle down" and crashes will cease until the next time I have to reboot.

You're still running the Beta build, right?  It would be interesting to see what happens if you installed the RTM build - if the problem persisted.

I'm running the RTM build and have the same problems constantly crashing. I'm running an MSDN copy of Office 2010 Pro x64 on a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate x64 box.

I've disabled the preview pane and things seems to be working for now. I'm fairly certain it's the preview pane generating the error upon startup if it's a message it doesn't like if first in your inbox or when you click to a message it doesn' like either.

FYI: I run Exchange 2010 with rollup 3 installed on all components.

Are the messages that crash your system coming from Mac users or is there no discernable pattern?

Can you post the Bucket ID of your crash report?

1)      Start | type View Problem History in the search box | enter when it brings up the control panel application

2)      On the bottom of the window, click View problem reports and responses

3)      Scroll down to the hang or crash report that was sent in | double click the entry

Hi,

I'm still using the Beta (where would I get the RTM build to try that?) and I'm still having the problem. I know for certain that some of the emails are NOT originating or being affected by Apple servers or machines because they are coming from our server (Apache) and being sent to an opt-in list of several thousand on a weekly basis. The mail software installed on the server is "1-2-All"

This also happens with many other emails. And, the vast majority of times, the emails sent from our server can be opened just fine. The only consistent factor that I can determine is that they are emails sent to a mailing list. In other words, I have never had an email from an individual fail.

Also, this happens to me when opening the email even if the preview pane was closed. If the preview pane is closed, the Outlook will not crash until I try to open the offending email.

Hope this helps.

Hi men, nice to see you!

I had the same problem with the Beta and the RTM. It only crashed with some people's (internal) emails, found this and solved the problem!

http://www.groovypost.com/forum/microsoft-office/outlook-2010-crashes-when-reading-or-opening-some-emails-t95911.html

So, added a Photo to every "problematic" user, and all works fine now! In the Exchange Management Shell:

Import-RecipientDataProperty -Identity "saigor" -Picture -FileData ([Byte[]]$(Get-Content -Path "Y:\Fotos\201003 Lankideak\saigor.jpg" -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0))

See you soon,

Hi,

I'm running the "official" version from the MVLS-site and I encounter the same problem: Mails from Macs cannot be opened or shown on a preview pane. If I close the preview pane and reply, I can read (and obviously reply to) the mails. After replying one such mail, I can restart the preview and all Mac-mails stop crashing Outlook. For how long ...

Eureka! Deleting Helvetica worked for me. In Windows 7, I checked Fonts through Control Panel and my Helvetic icon instead of displaying "ABC" was showing "$%&" - also it displayed no font foundary in the detailed view. In my former business of producing film separations for printers from graphic designers files in the '90s, fonts were guilty of at least 70% of all the torments we faced.....seems the little demons are still hard at work!

I have been battling this issue since the first 2010 Beta came out. I finally uninstalled 2010, switched to 2007, and no problems. Now that the full release version of 2010 Office came out, I installed it, and viola!, the same issue came back. I literally tried hundreds of fixes, but the one on this thread fixed it for me. I unistalled all of my Helvetica fonts and the problem went away for the very first time. I installed them back one at a time and the problem font (at least for me) was Helvetica Bold. Hope this helps someone as you guys sure helped me!

A month or so ago, I'd deleted Outlook 2010 and reinstalled 2007. No problems!!! Several weeks ago I downloaded my paid copy of Office 2010. No problems!! Until this morning, argh. Then, emails started crashing from certain senders again. Came back to this forum. Saw the Adobe Helvetica issue. Search fonts, found that the ADobe Helvetica had "$%&" in the font preview box. Deleted those several Helvetica fonts and now no problem. Thanks very much to trevorforever for that nice tip.

Agreed - I support hundreds of users in a medium sized business.  I have about 70 users running Office 2010 (either Standard or Pro Plus flavors in 32-bit).  About 30 of these users are experiencing this issue.  I have users without the Helvetica font, and they continue to suffer from this unwanted behavior....  Still searching for a fix!
July 19th, 2010 5:22pm

I also have the same problem articulated in this thread.  I do not have the aforementioned font installed I did check my fonts via the control panel and did not find any that appeared to be corrupt.

Although I have observed the issue occur whether the preview pane is on or off, it appears to be more likely to crash if you open emails in a new window.

Given the volume of reports on this issue I am surprised that this issue hasn't been acknowledged or addressed formally by Microsoft, especially since the software is in production now.  My outlook has sent at least 40 error reports by now after crashing.  The error reports take quite a long time to compile and even longer to send (I have a 7M Internet connection at home and work for an ISP/IXC sending the reports from either location takes forever).  There is no record of any of these reports in the action center (Windows 7 Ultimate).

For what its worth I've got a 64bit Dual Core machine running Windows 7 Ultimate, & Outlook 2010 (32-bit version).

This issue maybe a needle in a haystack for MS but I think it is time to throw some resources at this one...

I have the same problem but have found a simple workaround.

If an email crashes my Outlook 2010 I reopen Outlook and right-click the problem email.  In the right-click menu is the option of sending the email to ONE NOTE.  So far every email that has give me a problem has opened successfully in ONE NOTE.

I have also noticed that if an email from someone causes a crash, all the emails from that person tend to crash but only after a certain date.  The date is just for that person, not a general date for all crashing emails.

I have one client with two people who send me emails.  One persons emails come through just time and open properly.  The other persons emails are crashing.  Thery do not use Macs.

Any idea when this might be addressed ? I just bought this laptop so I could do work better/faster and now it has made my life even more harder than it was on my old netbook...

August 11th, 2010 4:11pm

I and all of my co-workers have also been having the same problem with Outlook 2010, Win7x64.  It only seems to be when trying to forward, reply, or print iTunes receipts, and viewing them works fine.  Helvetica font is not installed on my machine.   I always receive a dialog box saying "Contacting the server for information." and will not go away.  The email forwards fine in Outlook Web Access.  If I drag the email to my Hotmail & Gmail account and try forwarding from there it will eventually send after about 10 minutes, but still gives the same message of Contacting the server for information.  Our company exchange 2010 will not forward the message through outlook.

Just found out the print feature will give the same message of Contacting the server for information and after about 10 minutes will show the preview and let me print.  I think it has to be something with rendering engine of Outlook 2010.

You said it for me except that I am Vista Home Professional I have the upgrade to Windows 7 sitting on my desk but am afraid to install after all the problems with Office 2010 and Outlook in particular.

Looking at my problem reports it's been reported or submitted from my system alone 182 times.  I cannot isolate the problem as it affects different emails from different people at different times and seems random.  On Beta it used to affect mainly subscribed html emails, now with the full purchased version it doesn't happen all the time on these subscriptions but only some of the time.  It affects many personal and business emails with or without attachments or embedded graphics.

There is rarely an instance that I open Outlook and can read all my emails.  I am a graphic designer and I NEED Helvetica but have uninstalled those fonts anyway (they did not appear corrupted). No difference.  I have tried all and every solution on this wonderful thread - no change.

I think it's well past time that MS addressed this severe issue with Outlook 2010.  Isn't Beta supposed to be a Beta version to give you confidence to purchase the full release - not in this case it wasn't!!  Very frowny face Microsoft.

August 16th, 2010 3:14pm

Why do we get suckered into being guinea pigs for MSFT?  My Outlook 2007 worked fine and little did I know that buying a new computer with Windows 7 Professional and using Office 2010 Professional and the Outlook crashes regularly.  Reboots but whatever I can do to make this go away would be great.  I can't be bothered installing Enterprise 2007 at this point.  The KB article that was referenced did not discuss the pdf creator that someone checked off to make the crashing go away.

Hi,

A ways back in this thread I reported the problem everyone is having here...At the time I was using the Beta version. I have since upgraded to the 'released' version. The problem persisted. I DID find a Helvetica font installed on my machine, deleted it, and 95% of the problem went away. (Also, the printer use, Xerox Phaser 7760, has the Postscript Helvetica built in.) I will still, very occasionally, have an email crash in the same way. I wonder if, in addition to the Helvetica problem, there is another font family that causes issues.

Regardless, this problem didn't exist on Office 2007 (and earlier) and these solutions strike me as a big kludge. Yes, some of us have figured how to (mostly) get around this issue, and most of us might be able to live without a certain font (but Helvetica, really?), but this should be fixed at the code level...

Well for me the only option was to roll back to Office 2007 as most of us have work to do and no real time left over to find a way around this problem... Comment from MS would be nice.

Poor us.  Not depending on some types of messages: I could not use Outlook because of this, after opening 2 or 3 messages it is a constant crash happening. Having to somewhat depend on Outlook for my business, I had to re-load 2003 waiting for 2010 to be fixed.  Sorry.

It's now October and still no fix from MS.  I called them the other day because I could not get Office 2010 installed and 2007 uninstalled.  They wanted to charge me $250 to talk to someone.  I wiped out Vitsa and installed Win7.  Very happy with Win7, but not very happy with Outlook 2010.  Email crashing Outlook 2010 has been happening since the Beta version and MS either can't fix or deciced not to fix it.  I'm almost tempted to pay them $250 and laugh when their own tech can't fix it either.  Maybe then it will get fixed.  For now, I am going to try the removal of the Helvetica font and see what happens.

I have the exact same problem as is listed in the post (and many others).

I am stunned that a bug of the magnitude of this one get's through MS QA and no fix months after!!!

I cant see any helvetica fonts on my pc and it crashes when I read email from certain people. If I disconnect from the Exchange server it doesnt happen.

Why isnt MS monitoring this forum/thread and giving feedback.

Time to buy a Mac...

I agree with other posters on here.  I've been using OL2010 since July - everyday it crashes, unpredictably.  It is a very big nusiance.  How come MS isn't posting any solutions to this?
November 3rd, 2010 2:13pm

My crashing ended up being a result of some issues within the Exchange server - unfortunately i do not have details in regards to what was going on with Exchange but i know some changes were being made to accomodate another domain.

Once the Exchange issue was resolved, i had to delete and recreate my outlook profile and everything has been fine ever since!

I have just written a blog post on this topic - hopefully it will help with fixing the problems when people open messages and outlook crashes.

Definite fix for me!

I was experiencing issues where Outlook would crash when clicking on certain emails (from certain people) or when clicking on File (from the Menu bar). This only occurred when Outlook was connected. When Outlook was offline, it would work fine.

The following modification resolved the issue:

1.       Disconnect the computer from the network

2.       In Outlook, select File > Options

3.       Select Contacts

4.       In the Online status and photographs section, untick Show user photographs when available (requires restarting Outlook)

      5.       Click OK

6.       Restart Outlook

Hi Bob

Not sure about you but reducing functionallity sounds more like a workaround than a fix.

Did you try turning the photographs back on?   Did it still crash?

Running Win7x64 Office 2010 x64

Uninstalling those types of Helvetica which showed "%#$^" or something like that in preview fixed it. At least for now. Remember you have to restart, otherwise these fonts might be in use and can't be removed. There's still Helvetica Regular Obligue which I couldn't remove because it was "in use" even though I closed almost all processes, but seems to work for now anyway.

Thanks!

PS: I have to note that my crash occurred specifically and only in some HTML formatted emails. Some HTMLs were fine and all of the plain text ones.

Hi everyone, I just had this happen to one of our users we recently installed office 2010 standard for.  The steps I took to fix our problem were:

Uninstalled all version of office from her computer using the Add/Remove Programs in the control panel.

Downloaded a registry cleaner and removed all the Office registry keys that were left behind.

http://download.cnet.com/XP-Registry-Cleaner/3000-2094_4-10796916.html

Then restarted her computer, reinstalled office this time selecting customize then selecting to “Run all from My Computer” under the install options when you open the drop down menu for Microsoft Office

Hope this helps.

I'm having a similar problem. Having the reading pane open causes certain emails to crash but there are other emails that crash even when the reading pane is not open. This is costing me time & money every day & there's no way out of it now that Outlook 2010 has changed my database.

The problem is not solved by disabling Add-ins, by remiving Outlook temporary files or by turning off user photographs. I have a few qeustions:

  • Where can I raise an issue with Microsoft to get them to fix this?
  • Where can I get a list of 'Type 1' fonts so that I can remove & reinstall them?
  • Why is there no fix as I have been posting this message on these forums for months & I've seen thousands that are similar.
Thanks for your help.

after several months of using the RTM, mine has now started doing the same, crashing out randomly when reading (or actually mainly replying to) email.

Outlook 2010 on Win7 Pro, fully patched, MSE AV, connecting to SBS 2003

Everything I've read so far relates to either the social connector, or corrupt fonts

Out of interest, how many users here are using the Xobni plugin (which includes its' own connectors for linked in and Facebook et al?)

I am switching over our office from version 2007 to 2010 and already have one end user with this same problem!!

Receives email from a specific domain and every time he goes to open the emails from this domain name Outlook crashes. Then Outlook has to restart. We went as far as doing a fresh clean install of Windows 7 64bit and installed a fresh copy of Office 2010 Pro and bingo, same problem same domain name.

Need a fix ASAP!

I had the same problem and came looking for a solution. Someone mentioned fonts, so I started looking at emails that were causing problems. It seemed Verdana was a common font, so I reinstalled Verdana (emailed myself a zip file from another computer, then dragged-and-dropped into C-Windows-Fonts and accepted the reinstall).

The issue appears to have been solved for now. I will update if my Outlook crashes again with the preview pane enabled, but for now this fix is working.

Hello, when i try to read some emails in outlook 2010 it crashes. it's only when I read the message but I think it only happens for a certain type of message but as i can't view the message i don't know what common denominator is involved.

Hi, Just had the same problem. Found out that it was the picture attribute on the user in the Active Directory. When removing the faulty picture on the user in active directory the e-mails did not cause a crash anymore. So a workaround is to remove the picture on the active directory profile of the user. or to disable "show user Photographs when available (requires restarting Outlook)" under File-> Options -> Contacts.

I am one of those lowly users who have this issue and have had it going on for about a year. I have no idea how I found this section! I use Windows 7 Ultimate and Outlook 2010 (upgraded from the previous version) with Outlook Hotmail Connector installed.  Outlook only crashes when I receive a particular type of message in Outlook in the Hotmail Junk E-mail folder.  The message never contains a subject, the message only shows a folder, the message never contains a sender address and the message never contains my Hotmail address in the To: section.  If the message is the only one in Junk mail folder and I click on the Junk folder to see what is in it, Outlook crashes and restarts.  After three or four tries I am able to get Outlook to open with the Hotmail Junk E-mail folder highlighted.  At this point I am able to right click the folder and empty the folder of the offending email.  On 6-9-2011 I was able to move one of these into the Hotmail Inbox to see if the same thing happens (crash), it didn't crash with the message put there.  Message came from (         <mark@lyphagon.info>) with some home refinancing stuff.  Again, there is no email address, like mine or anyone else's address in the To: field, the subject line is always blank and the offending message is always in Hotmail. Also, prior to deleting some of these messages that crash Outlook in Hotmail connector, I have logged into Hotmail online and the message doesn't even show up there.  Lastly, I tried creating a "Rule" in Outlook that if this message comes in again to just drop in right into the Hotmail deleted file field, however there's no subject line or sender and it can't be done (sender only shows up if I'm able to get it into the Inbox).

Hi All,

I have had this nagging problem ever since I upgraded around 3 months ago. Like you all I have tried various different things. One thing I have found is that there is no "cure for all." Some say doing a .pst file check and recover using the tool within Outlook will work, however that didn't for me. I even bought a .pst file professional repairer software tool, all to no avail.

However, I have found a "fix" that worked for me, and believe me I have tried every other thing out there, and this genuinely did work for me. I can't say that it will work in every case, but if you're like me, and I was at then end of my tether with it all, you'll try anything.

There are two fonts that have been causing a problem within Windows, apparently it is only common when using MS Office / Outlook 2010 when on a Windows 7 64-bit computer.

These two fonts not only can cause Outlook to crash, but also Word. The fonts are “Times” but more commonly “Helvetica”. Trying to delete these fonts is a nightmare. If you try and delete “times” it won’t allow it because it is a system font, so a fix for this is to send yourself an e-mail using this font, then for some reason this fixes the issue.

If you look for “Helvetica” it doesn’t normally appear on your font list, until you try and open the e-mail in Outlook, this then crashes installs the font then won’t let you delete it as it now says it is in use by a program. Checking all the open programs proves futile, but I have found a way around it. If you re-boot the computer then download a copy of the font and install it this works.

For the first time ever I can now open all offending html type e-mails!

I thought I’d pass this information on to you all in the hopes that it helps someone else out, as this was driving me insane!

All the best, and happy fixing. Obviously do all the necessary back-ups etc before doing any of the above.

HemiJace, I'm having trouble finding Helvetica online.  Looks like everyone wants to charge for it.

Where'd you download this font from, exactly?

Hi there, so I've been reading and reading and reading threads since 2009.  I have the same damn problem with outlook 2007 crashing after service pack 1 update on Vista Home Premium.  And I can't find a fix anywhere.  Does this mean that since 2009 - MS has NOT been able to provide a solution?Do I have this right??

If you're having this problem on Outlook 2007 it's probably not the same problem. Does this happen even if you start Outlook in Safe Mode? (hold down CTRL while you click the icon) See if this helps: http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tsol.htm#safe

Hi Ben, thanks for your reply.  I think I just replied to the wrong thread in the first place - but IT'S DEFINITELY the same problem as everyone else has had throughout this topic.  I now have this problem.  Since installing SP1 and running on Vista - my email crashes sometime after opening, sometimes it will run for a few - but never for more than 3 / 4 emails.  The response is the same throughout all the threads that I've read.  So I can see that this has been happening since 2009 and search as I may, I cannot find a solution to this problem.

I have tried everything suggested in older threads - disabling add-ins, scanPST.exe, turning off windows search, adding binary data, changing default printer settings - and anything else that made a reasonable amount of sense.  Nothing.

So back to my original question - has this problem been around since 2009 with no solution TO DATE??

Well, not all crashes are the same crash and the one this thread is about is an Outlook 2010 crash which - as far as I'm aware - IS solved. You'll notice nobody has reported this issue on this thread in months.  You are likely having a DIFFERENT crashing issue.

O.K., so that said...What kind of account is this?  POP3? IMAP? Hotmail? Exchange? Something else?  How large is your PST file?

Have you tried creating a new Outlook profile?  http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tsol.htm#newprof

Marinak14,

Try installing Revo Uninstaller and click on the forced uninstall. The type in outlook in the search field and delete all instances of Outlook that come up, restart and run again. if it was me I would use this to uninstall all of office , restrat and reinstall.

I used this product to uninstall trend micro that had a master pw that even TM could not bypass. Also TM uninstall tool didnt work at all.

 GOOD LUCK

Ahh MR_FIX_IT, thank you for putting me out of my misery.  As far as i can tell this issue was happening on only my wife and my own contact records.  I was able to fix my wife's record by changing the photo to a png (instead of jpg), but my record persists in being a problem even after changing the photo.  So i thought back about how i changed my wife's... i created a whole new contact, deleted her old one, synched (by hitting refresh), and then saved the new one, synched and all was well.  I believe i did the same thing with my record but it didn't work.  So either i did something differently, or it still doesn't like the picture, or it has something to do with google apps synch, skype toolbar, iphone... likely in that order. i put a ticket into google apps service.  not the end of the world but would like to put my pic in my record.  Anyway, thanks for the work-around.

I had the same problem and tried a lot of things and nothing worked.

So I dragged the email that was crashing outlook to my Junk Mail.

I went to the Junk Mail folder and opened the same email and it worked!

Try it out and let me know how it goes. As for the cause - I have no idea why

certain emails crash Outlook.

I had this problem at my office, I researched a little and fix it.
The problem seems to be people using a font,
but the font file you have on the system doesn't read it correctly.

Check your font in Control Panel.
Normally the font should have ABG on there instead of $%&
all the font that has $%& cause it to crash.

Options -> Mail -> Stationery and fonts
Set NEW MAIL + REPLYING OR FORWARDING MESSAGES to a font that doesn't have $%&.
it will make all the emails to uses the same font,
but this trick helped me fixed my crashing issue.

Had a similar problem recently...  Could open e-mails fine.  But once opened e-mails were closed, next attempt to open an e-mail crashed out Outlook 2010.  My problems seems to be the Nuance Power PDF Add-In.  Simply unchecked it to deactivate then restarted Outlook.  Seems to have fixed my issues...
