Some Users Can't Receive E-mail AT ALL - Local or External - Send Fine - Only 3 out of 10 Users - 2003
I am having a strange issue with MS Exchange 2003. There are around 10 users on this exchange server, and for no reason 3 users stopped being able to receive messages, both internal and external, not even using a .local address. If I create a new user under active directory, and create a new mailbox, it works great, with both internal and external e-mail. It is only 3 of the users that just simply cannot receive any messages at all, but can send no problem. I can't believe a DNS issue, as again, other users on the same exchange server work fine, as well as new users also work fine. I could just create new mailboxes for these users, however it would be really hard for them to change their e-mail address. Anybody has any idea as to what the problem might be? This is running MS Exchange Server 2003 SP2. I have tried re-installing exchanged, and re-applied the SP2 update, still no go. All settings look right, and again, unchanged. Thank you

Is this true only if they use Outlook? Does it work if they use OWA? Does message tracking show the messages as delivered to the mailbox? Have you verified that the mailboxes don't have forwarding enabled to some other mailbox or contact? Have you tried creating a new Outlook profile for the users? Does the problem follow them from one computer to another? >If I create a new user under active directory, and create a new mailbox, it works great, with both internal and external e-mail. Thank you Saying "all settings look right" isn't very helpful. It is true on both Outlook and OWA. If i try and track the message it finds the message, and it says the "Message delivered locally to email@mydomain.com" , and then below it it says "Message scheduled to retry local delivery", and then again message has been delivered, and then again it will retry delivering. It keeps goings like that. Finally after a a few hours, i get a message back on the e-mail i sent the message from, my @gmail.com account from postmaster, saying the message delivery to the receipients has been delayed. Action : delayed, status 4.4.7 will-retry-until 1 july 2010. There is no fowarding enabled. I have not tried creating a new outlook profile on the local user, because it doesnt work with OWA either, so i didn't think that could possibly be the issue, should i try it anyway? I have deleted the account on the local computer, and resetup outlook again, and no difference.

Do they have any quotas set on the mailbox? Can they send a message to them self? Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

No they cannot send e-mail to themselves either. No message comes in at all. They do not have any restrictions to they mailbox. These are all admin accounts too, I am not sure if it makes a difference.

Are they all on the same message store? What is different about these accounts then others? I would use ADSIEdit and compare a working user to a non working user looking at attributes.Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

yes same message store. I don't know what ADSIEdit is, and how to use it. I will try some googling around to find out, and report back. Thank you. Any attributes I should look specifically for? thanks again

It's a tool to look at attribute level settings for User objects. Is anyone else on that message store having issues? If you move 1 of those users to another message store does the problem follow them?Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

I cannot create a new message store. This is small business server, max of 1. So I can't test that theory. I checked the attributes one by one, that was a litte longer then I expected, but it all looks the same. I am going to shortly try something i haven't tried before. I will go back to the site. My plan is to back-up the mailbox using exmerge, delete the mailbox, remove the exchange attributes for the user, purge the mailbox, and then create a new mailbox with the same e-mail address, import the messages back again using exmerge, and see if that solves the issue. One other forum i posted this on, the guy mentioned a corrupt e-mail file or folder, so i will let you know soon if that works. Sounds plausible to you?

The plan worked: 1- delete the email profile on the local computer the user uses 2- back-up the mailbox using exmerge (downloaded from MS download center)- use the two step process and save the pst in a convinient location. 3- delete the mailbox from exchange system manager 4- remove the exchange attributes for the user from AD 5- run mailbox cleanup and purge the bad mailbox, 6- from AD select exchange tasks for the user that had issues and create a new mailbox with the same e-mail address. 7- login to that user account from the local computer the user normally uses, creatre a new outlook profile and setup outlook again. 8- at this point there is no e-mail for the user, however e-mail works fine, i can send new messages from internal and external accounts and they all arrive again. 9- import the messages back again using exmerge again. i hope this helps people with the same and/or similar issues
