Slow performance and scary errors
I'm using Exchange 2003. There are 2 servers, a front end handling webdav, imap andactivesync, and a back end handling outlook clients and the inforomation store. This is an academic institution so our usage has just picked up. Performance has slowed and I'm seeing these errors on the backend server: Event Type:WarningEvent Source:ESEEvent Category:Performance Event ID:507Date:8/27/2008Time:11:26:28 AMUser:N/AComputer:MAILDescription:Information Store (3008) A request to read from the file "\MAIL\$b246f4c6-5e47-4f0a-9a67-32235f345617\$CopySrc00000000BE9B7508$" at offset 262144 (0x0000000000040000) for 65536 (0x00010000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (71 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. And errors like this on the front end server: Event Type:WarningEvent Source:Server ActiveSyncEvent Category:NoneEvent ID:3007Date:8/27/2008Time:11:26:04 AMUser:DOMAIN\user Computer:PLUTODescription:Exchange mailbox Server response timeout: Server: [] User: [user@domain.org]. Exchange ActiveSync Server failed to communicate with the Exchange mailbox server in a timely manner. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly and is not overloaded. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. These coincide. I looked at the hardware and it appears to be ok, no smart errors on the disks or anything else. I restarted the SA service and the errors stopped and performance improved for that day. Next day same issue so I restarted both servers, solved for that day. Next day (10AM) problem is back. Not sure where to go from here, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andy Zirkel.

Seems like a disk performance issue with the back end server. You may want to use SysInternals Process Explorer to check for anything reading writing excessively to the disks, or using a lot of system resources. Try the Performance MMC snap-in to check disk-queue length. Maybe there's an issue with the driver or firmware on your disk controller? Check the volume file system with chkdsk. Maybe an "offline defragmentation" of your database would help. I'm not sure what version of Exchange you have but a Google search would yield the procedure for that. - Dustin

Hi, For event 507,please contact your hardware vendor to perform a completely hardware Diagnostics and if that fails then perform a Offline Defrag. The disk defragmentation process rearranges the data that is stored on the computer's hard disks so that the files are more contiguous. Defragmentation helps increase data access and retrieval speed. offline defragmentation http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/07/08/177574.aspx How to defragment Exchange databases http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328804 For event 3007, this event may be logged for multiple causes. For example, the mailbox server is overloaded. So after you complete the hardware Diagnostics and correct the hardware issue, please double check event log to see whether event 3007 logs there. You can also check whether anti-virus application has been enabled on mailbox server. Besides, please check the below article. Server ActiveSync does not download all items during a synchronization session http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827615 Hope it helps. Xiu
