Size of emails
Query: if I send an email size of 1MB to 10 receipient, does that mean the Exchange Server is sending a total of 10MB out from the exchange?

If all of recipients are in the same server, but not on the same than sender. Email is sent once, and then distributed to recipients. If you sent them out from the Exchange to only single domain, then it is same story. If there is 10 different domain, it is 10 MB all together. -- Petri

Could you clarify--is your main concern the network traffic generated by Exchange or the storage space that the message will consume? If space is your main concern, I recommend the following articles, depending on your Exchange version: Exchange Server 2003 and earlier: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/175481 Exchange Server 2007: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/02/08/448095.aspx If network traffic is your concern, please reply and I'll try to follow-up with more information. It all depends on the recipients you are sending mails If 10 recipients residing on the single server then single copy of 1 MB is sent to server. If 10 users are split across 2 servers then one copy is sent to each server. If all 10 recipients in one server then users are split across two mailbox stores then mails is stored in two copies. This concept is called Single Store Instance. Krishna http://smtpport25.wordpress.com

Hi Charles, my concern is:E.g I need to send 1 email of 1 MB to 10 people (5 at @abcmail.com and 5 at @xyzmail.com) of 2 different domain externally.- The size sending out from the server, is it 1MB to @abcmail.com and 1MB to @xyzmail.com- The network traffic resources (bandwidth planning)I understand the part where the mails are send to internal people at the same domain, but they are external traffic out to other domain.regards.

Hi Ntsoo, I need to send 1 email of 1 MB to 10 people (5 at @abcmail.com and 5 at @xyzmail.com) of 2 different domain externally Your server will send 2 mails, one for abcmail.com and one for xyzmail.com, the network traffic will be approximate 2mb, that means the size sending out from the server is 2mb. If you check your SMTP log, you will find it sends the mail like this: HELO serverMAIL FROM: XXXXRCPT TO: recipient1@domain.comRCPT TO: recipient2@domain.comRCPT TO: recipient3@domain.com Data Thanks, Elvis
