Side by Side Exchange 2003 2013 installation

Im in the process of upgrading a number of servers in an extremely old environment, when attempting to install exchange server 2013 Im getting the following error message One or more servers in the existing organization are running Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003. Installation can't proceed until all Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 servers are removed.  The challenge is I cannot remove exchange 2003 until after I get 2013 instance installed.  There are a number of systems that use the 2003 exchange server to relay mail..

Hi

There is no possible way you can introduce Exchange 2013 in a environment where you have Exchange 2003 servers installed until and unless you are using some third party products like quest and few others who support this type of migration and they provide license  per user basis.

If you are looking without any third party then you would need to bring up at-least exchange 2007 RU11 or any later versions migrate the mailboxes and then migrate the mailboxes

Thank you for the fast reply, how about exchange 2010 can I install it, then upgrade to 2013.

Satish is correct you can either

1. Install Exchange 2007/2010, Migrate the 2003 mailboxes to the 2007/2010 server, then remove the 2003 instance, then install 2013 and Migrate the mailboxes from the 2007/2010 to 2013 and then remove 2007/2010 instance

2. Or use a 3rd party product like Lucid8's DigiScope, however even that would require you to remove the 2003 instance first and then install 2013, create the mailboxes and then use DigiScope to Migrate the Mailboxes from the offline 2003 EDB's into the production 2013 server.

As far as the systems that use 2003 to relay email you will want to ensure they are capable of doing so via 2013 and no ,matter which way you go you will have some downtime, reconfiguration to do

How many users do have to move forward to Exchange 2013.

You can follow the steps given into this informative article that covers all the required prerequisites and aspects while planning and migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2013 : http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration-deployment/planning-and-migrating-small-organization-exchange-2003-exchange-2013-part1.html

Meanwhile, when need to migrate users mailboxes between Exchange 2003 and 2013, I would suggest you to have a look on LepideMigrator for Exchange software that provides a hassle-free environment in order to get this job done without having downtime.

Hi,

As all above suggestions, Exchange 2013 is unable to coexist with Exchange 2003 in one environment. If you want to upgrade or migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013. We need to install a Exchange 2010 and migrate from Exchange 2003 to 2010. Then remove Exchange 2003, install Exchange 2013 and do a migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013.
