Shared vs User mailbox and Delegates
Hello all, We have a situation where 2/3's of our mailboxes Recipient Type Details are Shared Mailbox and the rest are User Mailbox. When it comes to Delegate Access, if it is a Shared mailbox, you can only choose a person that is set as User Mailbox from Outlook 2010. We don't really have a lot of our staff that would use the Delegate Access feature and we have an alternative way to get the Delegate Access done, but I do have a couple of questions. Is there any harm in leaving the mailboxes set as Shared as opposed to changing them to User mailboxes? Is there any benefit to changing them to User mailboxes? thanks, James

A shared mailbox assumes just that. If these are supposed to be regular mailboxes, I would convert them to that.

Well, not as easy as that. My lead tech here says if they can do the Delegate Access with how we're currently set up, then leave it. I'm sure our management will want to go ahead and convert them all. Just seeing if would be any issues or benefits in leaving as is or converting them. thanks, JamesJames Gonzales

I think you will find that other hings will not work as you expect ( in addition to the delegate issue) unless the mailbox is set as regular user. The assumption with a shared mailbox is that the AD account is disabled as well. THere is no reason to keep them as shared if that is not your intention. ( And no penalty if you convert them to a regular user) Were they created as shared mailboxes or did they come that way when migrated from Exchange 2003?

The disabled account is a hidden account, correct? Because all or most of the accounts that came over in our migration, were not disabled accounts. They came over that way with our migration from Exchange 2003. I understand what you're saying about changing them to User and the possibility of issues leaving them at Shared. Well, if we get told to change them, then we'll have to, although my lead tech figures, if it isn't broke, don't fix it! thanks, JamesJames Gonzales

No, the shared/and resource mailboxes are not hidden from the GAL by default. I think those accounts should be corrected and set as regular account personally. Just my 2 cents. :)

ok, thanks. I agree, I think they should be corrected, now I just need to convince my lead tech here. Thanks for your guidance. JamesJames Gonzales
