Server sizing for Exchange 2003
Dear all, we plan to buy a new server for Exchange 2003...following situation in the moment: 2 servers, one with 120GB Mailboxes (around 1000 users) and the other with 85GB public folders... we plan to migrate both servers to one with following configuration: 2x Quad CPU 4GB Memory 700GB external Storage 2x70 and 2x140 internal... i found many tools for sizing but not for Public Folders...both servers are many in access... is this configuration enough to consolidate both servers? thx in advance richard

Basically, pls consider to do a usage profiling for your existing system. Otherwise, it is difficult to comment if you can consolidate it into one server. The most important factor is the Disk IO usage information. You need to study current Disk IO usage on your mailbox server and PF server. And then you can do some basic calculation to see if your new server has enough Disk IO provided or not. Disk IO Measurement and Consideration:1. Use prefmon to collect Mailbox server and PF server Disk IO usage information2. Sum of the avg Disk IO for Mailbox server and PF server during peak usage period (typically office hour)3. Refer to the disk subsystem spec to see the Disk IO can be provided by disk subsystem in new Exchange Server4. If the Disk IO performance for the new Exchange Server is larger than the Sum of the avg Disk IO for Mailbox server and PF server during peak usage period. Basically, you can consolidate it to new server Please refer to the following information for detail calculation. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125019(EXCHG.65).aspx Cheers, Victor Tong (Blog: http://www.0101news.com)MCSE,MCTS,MCITP
