Server name is invalid - installing Exchange 2007 Management tools
Hello,I am trying to install the Exchange 2007 management tools onto a backup media server (Backup Exec) and I receive the error message: "The server name is invalid. It contains characters other than...."The problem is the server name is SAL_SERV03, I'm sure it's the underscore character it doesn't like.It would be very difficult to change it now as this server provides other applications such as SQL Server etc. Is there any way around this? Thanks for anyone who can provide assistance.-Tom

Hi,Follow up withKB909264 (Naming conventions in Active Directory for computers, domains, sites, and OUs), underscore isa disallowed characterin conventions for computer accounts. So I recommned you to not install Exchange 2007 managemet tool on that server,we can install it on any other computer which is in domain environment.Related information to share with you:Installing Exchange 2007 Management Tools On a 32 Bit Operating Systemhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/555841How to Install the Exchange 2007 Management Toolshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232090.aspxRegards,Xiu

Hi Tom,I agree with Xiu. You should search other computer for Management Tool installation but in case you don't have any other choice then you can go for kinda risky try...Rename the server name temporary, install Exchange server, rename back to original name, add DNS record of the temporary name which you were used to install Exchange server and check the situation but this may affect your existing and working other applications and SQL server...You should test this first in labenvironment (like, on a workstation) for simulation.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Thank you very much for the information. I think I will have to change the server name to get this to work as this is a sql server. Sql server does not like to have the name changed so I will have to work through that issue as well. I sure wish there was an easier way... oh well thanks again!

It seems like a 'stupid' issue since I´m trying to install the Tools in my W7 to manage our server. If it´s not recommeded the usage of some characters in the name, why the wizard allows to install the server using 'snbr-srv' as the name in our case? * we are using SBS 2008 Premium Ed.tks, Renato P
