Server and Exchange not working after Tuesday Updates.
I have a client running SBS2008 with Exchange. Seems like there were some updates last night and today they rebooted the server only to have it hang on Installing Updates Step 3 or 3 0% Completed I went down and rebooted again and same thing. Sat there for over an hour on this screen. Powered down and rebooted in safe mode. Saw it Flash quickly on Step 3 of 3 then booted fine into safe mode. Restarted it in Normal Mode and it went in. thought everything would be fine... But then noticed the Exchange services were not running. 3 or 4 of them were stuck on "Starting..." Could not stop them or change anyching without locking up services.msc Went to Uninstall the updates and when clicking on VIEW Installed Updates, it seems like it was searching but the list never poped up. Did a restart and this time it hung on Applying Settings... Went back into safe mode with networking, fine. But cant boot normally. In safe mode i noticed i the log SPLDR failed to load. This is were i am at and cant seem to get anything working. I Dont claim to be an exchange expert but this seems directly related to the updates. I Think it may have been SP2 that updated but not sure. Have not had to do anything on this server since it was setup a year or so ago. We normally let it install Critical updates and have never had an issue like this. Customer is currently down. Any suggestions? Thank You!Bob Karon Computer Solutions www.INeedBob.com

SP2 of what? Exchange service packs don't install through Updates. I am also pretty sure that there were no Exchange updates this month either. Windows 2008 SP2 was released about 12 months ago at least. So unless someone approved some very old updates in the SBS console, not sure what it was from there. Change all of the Exchange services to disabled, and boot the machine up. Then go looking through the event viewer for errors. However, if you are sure it was related to the updates from Tuesday night, your best option is to contact Microsoft. I am pretty sure that they provide support for patches delivered by automatic updates free of charge. Simon. Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.
