Send domain email to external SMTP server?
Hi, I am in the process of migrating my users over to my new WSBS 2003 R2 server. Previously, I had all my email clients set to send/receive directly to my ISP via their individual POP accounts. Now that I have a couple of users migrated to use Exchange (using the pop connector in exchange and the same email addresses as before), they can no longer send email to other users on my domain. Exchange server bounces the email saying no mailbox exists. Sending to external domains works fine. How can I configure exchange to forward "internal domain" email addresses via SMTP to the ISP if no Exchange mailbox exists for that user yet? Thanks!

Does your old organization have an exchange / smtp server installed on it? The only way you will be able to accomplish this is by adding a secondary smtp address on the foreign (old) smtp server then forwarding the mail from the new server to the mailboxes on the old server using the secondary address... In Old SMTP server create additional SMTP address for which server is authoritative, call it anything you like that is NOT publicly routable. e.g. domain.pvt, domain.local etc On new Exchange create SMTP connector which sends all email for the above domain directly to the old smtp server (smarthost) In new domain create AD contacts for all users that are using the additional smtp address above create exchange mailboxes in the new domain for these users & forward all mail to their contact created above Exchange handles all email for the domains for which it is authoritative as local email. This means that if exchange is authoritative for xyz.com you cannot forward xyz.com email to a foreign server on the same address space, you must use a different address space.

Unfortunately, no. my old server was a simple DC running W2K Server. This is my first exchange server. My "old" users have Outlook accessing a POP account at my ISP, and the "new" users are having exchange access their old POP accounts at the ISP via the POP connector. Could I create a sub-domain just for internal email so that exchange would only handle the internal sub-domain, and still have the POP accounts receive my public domain messages from the ISP, which of course would include those users who are not yet converted? Thanks!

Hi, you can share your smtp domain there is an good step by step tutorial here http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-2003-SMTP-Namespace-Sharing.htmland here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321721this way when the user is not on the exchange organization the messages for that user will be delivered to your ISP Hope it helps, Pablo
