Secondary email server
Hi all, I hope this is the correct place to open this topic. I'm starting to work with Exchange so forgive me if my question sounds stupid. I'll try to explain the situation in much detail as I can. If you need anymore details just let me know. I started working for a company that has a Windows SBS with Microsoft Exchange 2007 installed and configured. We have a public domain registered (lets say example.pt) that has configured two MX entries (mail.example.pt and mail2.example.pt). The first one has a preference of 10 and the second of 50 The first one points to our server public address (fixed IP) The second one points to an external mail server used as backup in case of failure on the first one. Now my problem is the following: If the secondary entry is not available we stop receiving emails from external sources, even though in my perspective the primary server should not be affected. The second problem, I believe is related to the first is that if I create a new user in my exchange server and don't create it on the secondary one, then the user will not receive emails from some domains (ex: hotmail.com) I already looked at exchange configuration, but as I mentioned before i'm quite a newbie in this and am completly lost. Can someone maybe give me some indications on what can be wrong or how can I troubleshoot this situation Thank you in advance, Scalius

Hi Scalius, You said you have two MX record 10 and 50 for mail.example.pt and mail2.example.pt. Email from external always will come from mail.example.pt MX 10 Only external email will come from MX value 50 if first one goes down. WHat is external mail server, Is it your ISP hosting it. How it is connected with first one. You must need to check your MX entry with ISP.Anil

Anil Hi Anil, regarding the MX entries i'm sure they are as I described because if I do an online nslookup on the domain it return the first MX record with a preference of 10 pointing to my server and a second pointing to the secondary host. The external mail server is a hosting service we bought from an external company. Regarding the question how is it connected to the first one I don't understand exactly what you mean. So according to what you say probably I have some bad configuration in my exchange server, right? Any idea what could be causing this? Thank you

Yes, Always you should get email in first server from internet untill first MX goed down. You ned to check whether you have configured exchange to receive email from internet. Configure Exchange 2000/2003 to Receive E-Mail for other Domains: http://www.petri.co.il/configure_exchange_2000_2003_to_receive_email_for_other_domains.htm Configuring Exchange 2007 Hub Transport role to receive Internet mail: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/11/17/431555.aspx Anil

Thank you very much Anil, that was my problem was the exchange was not accepting anonymous. Just one more question. My connection is behind a router with nat configured. This option I activated can be a security threat?

Hi, You are accepting mails from everywhere, but that is quite normal so it's not a threat directly. The one thing you need to make sure of is that you do not relay mails from the outside network. /MartinExchange is a passion not just a collaboration software.

Then do not put IP Address rather put it to obtain the IP automatically and the one which does not has any static IP assigned. Refresh IP of both machines. See the effect. It will resolve the Exchange issues. Regards, Vishal Verma.
