Secondary MX for exchange 2007
Hi All,We use exchage 2007, I'm looking to set up a secondary MX that will hold email in the event that our server is unavailable and forward it on once we get exchange back online.I'm fine setting up all of the DNS records but does anyone know how I can up the server?Could I use IIS? I don't really want another exchage server to do the job.If IIS won't do, could you suggest some software that will and let me know how to configure it?Many thanks,Jonathon

I will advice (as you dont want to lose emails in case exchange is down) go for a FW device named mxtreme which can stor emails for some days. As soon as the server is up, will flush the emails.this device is really good when it comes to anti spam.I think u can point your secondry MX to this kind of devices which can really hold emails.Raj

Hi Raj,Thanks for your advice but I'm really looking to have the backup MX server offsite and would like to use our hosting company which provides us with a dedicated server 2008 machine.Ideally I'd like to use IIS if it's possible or if not then some other software that I can install on this machine. Many thanks,Jonathon

Hi,You can create a SMTP server on the dedicated windows server, and put as the smarthost to forward the inbound the email. Then create secondary MX record for it.ThanksAllen

Hi Allen,Thanks for your help, I've been looking at our IIS server that I want to use as the backup mx.So I set up an SMTP server for the domains and just put our primary MS Exchange server as the smart host and the mail will be forwarded on? - Just checking I understood you properly, if that's the case I'll try it out. Thanks,Jonathon

That should work fine, but I feel compelled to give you a couple of caveats. First, the backup server is likely to become a spam magnet if you don't already have gateway antispam implemented since many spammers automatically send to the secondary server on the assumption that it's less protected than the primary. Second, since nearly all SMTP hosts will retry for a couple of days, this really only gives you additional protection for an outage longer than that.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.". Thanks for your input Ed, I've just found an issue with my planned configuration, the IIS server I wanted to use is also used to host our website. It sends emails out now and again so already has an SMTP server, should I create a new SMTP server for my backup and set it to use a different IP address? (the server has a couple) Thanks, Jonathon

I don't know that it matters, really.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.".
