Searching Exchange Server 2003 Standard for Specific Email
I have a 2003 standard server with SP2 running Exchange 2003 standard SP2. I currently have about 60 user accounts in this single domain environment. I need the most effective way to search for specific email from a specific name. I need to be able to save this email and produce for attorneys to review. What is the most effective way to search all user accoounts for mail from a specific email address or domain? Thank you for any help!!

Exmerge will not search by From address or domain so you will either need some third party software such as Ontrack PowerControls or you will have to gain access to each users mailbox and do a search from Outlook.MVP Exchange Server

If you know the subject or attachment name, you can use Exmerge.

If the data you are going to produce might be used in a court of law, you might want to check with the attorneys before you do anything to make sure that you handle the "chain of custody" according to their wishes. Otherwise, the other side can argue that the evidence is tainted. Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Yes, ExMerge cant export the messages based on the From field. Yet, if you combine the ExMerge with Message Tracking Center, it would be an effective way to get the message you want Message Tracking Center can locate the message based on the From field, and get the accurate delivery time. So, you can set the mailbox and the timeslot to get the mail

Good point, I forgot about Message Tracking Center. Once he finds the message he can export based on Subject and/or Dateof the message using Exmerge.exe.MVP Exchange Server

Very odd, for some reason message tracking center comes up empty when searching for this specific address. I think I need to work it form each PC, and luckily there are only 5 needing to be searched. Thanks for all the advice! If there is a white paper on using ExMErge for the search that would be great!

There is a rather large Mailbox Merge Wizard (ExMerge).doc that is included in the download.THe biggest issues tend to be permissions related. So be sure to understand how to assign perms to the account that you running Exmerge as. I think its better to create a specific generic account for this purpose. One that isnt a member of any elevated permissions group ( Admins etc..)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273642ExMerge Does Not Work Unless You Have Receive As and Send As Permissions on the Storehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/292509How to configure an account to use the ExMerge utility in Exchange 2000 Server and in Exchange Server 2003

With Attorneys involved, I would just go ahead an purchase Ontrack Powercontrols as it will give you the most granularity to search and export very easily directly from backup tape or offline database. With fees they charge they can afford the minor expense.MVP Exchange Server
