Afternoon, Is it possible through the search-mailbox cmdlet or multi-mailbox search via ECP to determine items that were in a folder before they were deleted? For example, under Inbox say we had a folder called "Keep for Reference" and that folder had five items. If the folder, "Keep for Reference" gets deleted and the the deleted items emptied is it possible to return the mail items if the user remembers the name of the original folder? I understand the items are in the dumpster but if you take the above example one step further and the mailbox has thousands of emails and single item recovery is set for 60 days it is pretty much like trying to find a needle in a haystack Paul

Zi, I came to the same conclusion but the documentation for AQS used by the Exchange cmdlets / ECP is pretty poor in my experience. I have opened a PSS case for the same and to determine if the properties of an mail item contain any reference to the original location(i.e folder path) when in the dumpster. From my analysis to date I can only determine that when the mail exists in a folder before being moved to the dumpster the PR_Parent_EntryID points to the parent folder, when the item is in the dumpster this changes to point at the entity Deletions Paul

The response from PSS is that it is not possible to determine original hierarchy of a deleted message when it is residing or recovered from the dumpster. I believe that this makes the often touted statement that backups are not required if a four copy DAG is used and with a correspondingly adequate retention period highly contentious. Paul
