Screentips when you hover mouse over email

Dear support,

I am investigating the request from our customer who is complaining about these screentips that appears in Outlook 2010 when you hover mouse over particular email - a box pops up over mouse cursor with information about recipient, date and size of the email. This feature annoyes the people.

I have been searching over many internet forums where is mostly described this issue as "Outlook feature" that cannot be changed, or that you can widen reading pane to minimize the screentip box size. I have also learned that this feature can be little bit customized by playing with settings under View/View settings/Format collums. Still we cannot manage to disable these screentips completely.

I would not ask for support considering this issue is the feature actually. But we have users who actually do not have this screentip poping up when they hover mouse over email. That is interesting thus I wonder whether and what is the way to turn it off also for other users.

Thank you in advance for any hint!

You can't turn it off but they removed it from Outlook 2013 (and 2016)... so if an upgrade is in your future, its something to look forward to.

Thank you for answer Diane, but do you have any idea how is it possible that there are users who have Outlook 2010 and no such screentips? That is mystery for me

The only ways i know to remove the screentips from the message list is by removing columns. Also, people who use the keyboard to move around are less likely to see the screentip as they won't hover over messages.

Thanks, I tried to play with collumns by removing some of them. Still I cannot get rid of the screentip with the time when it was received. If I remove that collumn, it will also disappear from reading pane, so this is not applicable.

And now another user have all standard collums (recipient, subject, received) but no screentip over mouse cursor. It is hard to support this when Microsoft itself says it cannot be disabled..yet for some people it is disabled for some mysterious reason :(

Are you sure they are using Outlook 2010?

I am sure they are using Outlook 2010, they have provided a screenshot to me, where it can be recognized. Do you have any other idea in this matter?

No, I don't... I'm not aware of any addins or configurations that can disable the screentips. Moving the cursor over outlook when its not in focus won't bring up the popups if the field is shown in full in the message list (like a short subject), neither will using the mouse to navigate.

I can get the standard message list view down to just the received field in the popup - i was hoping that changing the time format would get rid of received, but no such luck. In single line view (no preview pane or it's on the bottom) the popup will only show for fields that are completely visible.

Marek, try this. I think this may be what you want.

In Outlook, browse to File > Options > General

Under the User Interface Options section, you will see an option labeled ScreenTip Style, try setting that to Don't show ScreenTips

Here is a screenshot for your reference...

Let me know if that works for ya.

Yes Diane, I was able to get to the same result by playing with the settings. But at least the received time keeps showing up.

Anyway, thank you for trying to help me and playing with this for me! :)

I guess I have to move focus to the machine where it is not poping up, according to user. As I have received some screenshot as evidence only, I need to verify how exactly this screenshot without any popup has been made - whether the mouse was really hovered over email etc.

Hello Ross, thank you for the hint. This is something we have tried already, but this affects only menus/buttons in Outlook navigation pane. Not the screentips in message list. Unfortunately :(

Yea, from what i know those cant be disabled. As you mentioned you can slightly alter them, but you wont be able to turn them off in any way.

As Diane mentioned Outlook 2013 might solve your issue.
