STM file size growth
I have a dedicated Exch03 public folder server in the US, and a replica in the UK. The server in the US recieves all the inbound internet mail, on that server the stm file is 60 GB, the edb file is 30 GB, and internal white space reported as 10 GB. The replica sever in the UK has an stm file of 1 GB, the edb file is 59 GB, and the reported internal white space is 6 GB. As you can see there is a big difference in size, although the same data lives on both servers, but obviously stored in different ways. Is this a normal behaviour, is there a way to convert the data in stm file to edb, or disable the stm file usage all together to reduce the storage usage, 99 % of the users are MAPI clients. The main worry I have is that things will blow up if the stm file keeps growing, and I'll eventually have to do an offline defrag and it'll take many hours of down time. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you

This is normal stm files are used for things like owa while edb files are used for outlook. Take a look at this site at msexchange.org http://www.msexchange.org/articles/Exchange-Databases-Disk-Consumption.html Thanks

Thank you, I've come across this article prior to the post, it would be great if someone knows of any tweaks to put a stop on the growth of this STM file.

You can run a defrag on it to decrease its size. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192185 But the only way to stop it is have the users NOT use OWA and have them start using Outlook which will use the edb file.
