SP1 breaks Lync

Enivornment: Win7 64-bit clients with Office 2013 32-bit and separate Lync 2013 32-bit installation (excluded from Office, installed as a separate package).

Scenario: We are looking to install Office 2013 SP1 company wide on ~700 clients

Problem: SP1 breaks Lync 2013 with the following problem on error on launch:

Faulting application name: lync.exe, version: 15.0.4569.1503, time stamp: 0x52b0af33
Faulting module name: Uc.dll, version: 15.0.4420.1017, time stamp: 0x5067368a
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00002e11
Faulting process id: 0x7b4
Faulting application start time: 0x01cf3e54415abf5d
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\lync.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\Uc.dll
Report Id: 99e2b9f5-aa47-11e3-ae13-180373b1088b

The only way I've been able to get it to work is to uninstall Office and Lync via the fixit on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501, re-install Office including Lync. But this isn't really practical for 700 clients and uninstalling office obviously losing settings, requiring cached copies of mailboxes being re-downloaded etc. Re-installing Lync only does not work.

Anyone have any suggestions how I can get Lync to work without re-installing the entire office package?

Thanks.

Hi,

Perform a clean boot to re-install Lync, does this help?

Hi Melon,

Sorry for the slow reply. Unfortunately clean boot didn't help.

Any other ideas?

I've been getting the same error, but I think it was the series of Windows Updates just prior to installing Office 2013 SP1 that caused Lync to break.  I haven't been able to confirm this though, but I am 99% certain that's the case.

I've tried everything to overcome the error to no avail (repair, uninstall/reinstall, removing Lync Windows Updates, installing removing Office 2013 SP1, system restore etc.)

Below is the error.

I fixed my problem.  I uninstalled the Shortel client referenced above.  After a reboot, Lync failed again with the error at the bottom.

I then went to Programs and Features, selected Office 2013, chose the repair option, rebooted and now Lync works.  And I also have Office 2013 SP1 installed.

Hi Rub3n5r,

I deploy updates via SCCM and didnt have any issue until SP1, but sure, its likely the part of SP1 that causes the issue might have been in an update that I never installed prior to SP1.

If you look at my error and yours, you will see its different DLLs we are having issues with. I used to have issues with uccapi.dll back with Lync 2013 pre SP1 with ShoreTel 13.2. Which ever installed last of the two broke the other. The fix was to install ShoreTel first, replace uccapi.dll in the ShoreTel install folder with the version of the file from a Lync installation, edit shoretel.manifest to remove lines, install Lync second. But if you are on a different version to 13.2, this might not be your fix.

http://www.shoretelforums.com/forums/forum/other/shoretelforums-com-updates-bugs-and-suggestions/9078-microsoft-lync-2013-crashing

But even with those issues, repairing Lync always worked (but it broke shoretel communicator without the above fix).

Now my problem dll is uc.dll and not uccapi.dll. ShoreTel seems unaffected by all of it. The ShoreTel install doesn't seem to have a uc.dll.

I did notice by doing the hotfix uninstall of all of office and reinstalling Office including Lync with SP1, uc.dll is 23,776KB big, date modified 1/10/2012, if I do a repair on Lync, uninstall, reinstall, the file ends up being 24,769KB and date modified is 1/23/2014. Similiar behaviour with ucaddin.dll, uccapi.dll and ucmapi.exe. But replacing them all on a broken install with the versions from a working install doesnt help.

Hi,

I have noticed some issues on Lync since the SP1 released. I'm doing researching on this, and will update as soon as I get any information.

Thanks Melon, keep me posted please.

I also tried deleting all the UC files, repairing office which re-created them, but it didnt help.

Tried uninstalling Lync 2013, deleting the UC files (and not deleting them as well) and re-installing fresh with the Lync 2013 SP1 included installer, no difference either.

Hi,

Any one who comes up against the problem between Lync and SP1, kindly refer to this thread below and see the proposed answer, currently we can use the workaround to use two config.xml an deploy Office & Lync/Skydrive Pro separately.

Hi,

We had this issue in very limited cases. Turns out it was user-related as another user could log in and not experience this problem.

The user account that was used to install the latest Lync patches seemed to break, crashing with event ID 1000 in Uc.dll.

When we removed that user profile and the user logged back in, they received the "Skype for Business needs to change back to Lync and needs to restart". Once that happened the problem went away (so far).

So it could be an user-based issue with the roll back from Skype for Business to Lync?

HTH,

Chris

Hi Chris, its a while ago. But I think we traced it back to ShoreTel Communicator sharing uc.dll and there was an incompatibility with Lync 2013 and ShoreTel 13.2 or something. But we don't have this issue with ShoreTel 14.2 and Lync 2013 SP1 or Skype for Business.

Some if you use ShoreTel, check if those clients with issues are on an old version. Or maybe another phone system client you have that also shares uc.dll.

Thanks, but we don't have ShoreTel Communicator or any PABX systems connected to Lync. We only use Lync for IM and presence, although we do have voice and video enabled, it only works Lync-Lync.

The problem we have creates the exact same event log 1000 pointing at uc.dll:

Faulting application name: lync.exe, version: 15.0.4737.1000, time stamp: 0x55801b04
