I would ask this in a Windows 2008 Forum:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsserver//

Thanks for your reply. If I go back to Windows 2008 Forum, someone will say "You should go to the IIS 7 Forum for SMTP." When I went to IIS 7 Forum, someone said that "SMTP was no longer a component of IIS and supportwould be best found with theExchange Group.." So, I'd like to find the fix..Any suggestions are appreciated.

You may want to try removing and re-adding the SMTP service and see if that fixes it.

Thanks again for your reply. We have successful removed and re-install the SMTP feature from the Windows Server 2008 R2 x64. The condition does not change and the error message presists. The SMTP services will not start. The error messagebeing "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in inetinfo.exe[6732]".I'vechecked the Application Events to discover this System Event "The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s)."

Thanks for your suggestion. I've completed an IIS re-install and Add the SMTP feature on this Windows Server2008 R2 x64. The SMTP Feature is listed. The IIS console for managing the SMTP still appears without errors. Using this IIS Console for SMTP: All Attempts to connect to a Server fail. "Unable to connect to localhost. The target server does not have the SMTP service installed." I've checked the Services: The Simple Message Transport Protocal is listed in the Service - but attempts to start the service result in an event message; "The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the path specified." Tried Something else: used Regsvr32 with these two dlls; smtpsnap.dll, smtpadm.dll are successful. However, any attempts on smtpsvc.dll resulted in this error message; "The module smtpsvc.dll was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that smtpsvc.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again." Any suggestions are appreciated.

The basis of the error originatedduring the Upgrade from Windows2003 R2 to Windows 2008 R2the Metabase.xml was not converted and became corrupted. Our solution envolved forcing Windows Server 2008 to rebuild the metabase.xml file. This was accomplished with number of steps, stopping the IIS process, swapping out the file to an older version, attemptto restart the IIS process which fails. Followed by replacing the failed metabase.xml file with the previous. This condition will promoted the rebuild of the metabase.xml file. The IIS and the SMTP process will once again restart. Done...

I also am trying to get SMTP working on a Server 2008 R2 box running IIS 7. It was not upgraded from Server 2003. All posts I've read say it is impossible.. or revert back to IIS6 instructions. I believe I got the SMTP E-Mail feature working but without an SMTP Server it's useless and I find no place to insatll the server part in IIS 7. I've been caught in this same loop looking for answers "Thanks for your reply. If I go back to Windows 2008 Forum, someone will say " You should go to the IIS 7 Forum for SMTP."
