SMTP Error Causing Mail Delivery Problem - Critical!
Well, I guess I've screwed the pooch! Friday I inadvertantly uninstalled and reinstalled the SMTP service on our Windows 2003 SBS Server running Exchange 2003. Little did I know the consequences of that action. I am now educated enough to know (I think) that the IIS Metabase is hosed and that is causing no mail to be delivered. Imagine the delight of everyone in the company, especially my boss. This is what I am getting when doing a DNS check: <<< 220 SERVER.dms-systems.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.211 ready at Sat, 21 Apr 2007 15:57:04 -0400 >>> HELO www.checkdns.net <<< 250 SERVER.dms-systems.com Hello [195.60.98.252] >>> MAIL FROM: <dnscheck@uniplace.com> <<< 250 2.1.0 dnscheck@uniplace.com....Sender OK >>> RCPT TO: <postmaster@dms-systems.com> <<< 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for postmaster@dms-systems.com After researching the message and reading lots of MS instructions, here is what I have done to try and fix the issue which up until now has not done so. Reinstalled Exchange Server 2003 Reinstalled SP1 Reinstalled SP2 Restored the first backup of IIS Metabase None of this has worked unfortunately and there doesn't appear a system backup that I can restore that has the metabase.xml file in it. I am at a loss at the moment on what to do next. I hope someone can tell me how to get my email delivery working again. Thanks for your help! Frank

I just made the same critical goof up. Indeed, the IIS Metabase was the problem, but fortunatly I had a backup. For those who have this problem in the future, be aware that it appears that some software installations or updates may automatically make a backup of the IIS Metabase for you. You can learn about backup and restoration of the Metabase here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/8/8/08897dc6-a15b-499b-a41e-da21ff1c4c5f/BackupIISMetabase.doc
