SMTP Connector issue
Exchange 2003 SP2 is what I have. I have several SMTP Connectors that have address spaces pointing to hosts outside of Exchange but still on the internal network. For example a sharepoint server might have the address hostname.internalcountydomain.x. Can I use on a SMTP connector an address space of an ipaddress instead of a FQDN? This one application on one of our hosts receiving the message from exchange expects the message to have a SMTP address of alianame@10.x.x.x instead of aliasname@fqdn see what I'm saying? I was unsure of changing the SMTP Connector that is handling this job's address space from fqdn to IP address as I didn't first no if it would take and second what would happen if it did.

Actually @FQDN is use for DNS resolution from your DNS so message can relay to desination using DNS lookup. You can use IP address if you use smart host for relay message in SMTP connectorAnil

I'm not doing a good job of explaning the situation. let me see if this is better. I do have a SMTP connector that has an address space of * that relays to a smart host that uses external DNS for resolution to outside domains. But the host I want to relay messages too is actually in our internal network. Since we don't have MX records in our internal DNS we have been using SMTP connectors with the address space of the FQDN of the host we want to relay the message to e.g. an address space of hostname.county.snap.sal. Note: We do this often to route messages from Exchange to SharePoint. Then if a message sent to test@hostname.county.snap.sal it will get routed to the IP address defined on the dedicated SMTP connector that has the address space defined as hostname.county.snap.sal and uses the "forward all mail through this connector to the following smart host" to get the message to the correct host. What I would like to know is if on the SMTP connector can I use an address space that is an IP address instead of hostname.county.snap.sal or * and if a message is addressed to test@10.20.1.25 uses the SMTP connector with the address space of 10.20.1.25 and route the message to that IP address which is also defined on the "forward all mail...."? I know this is a strange question but I have a host application for workflow that expects to see the message arrive with the address of test@10.20.1.25 instead of test@hostname.county.snap.sal. Hopefully this is clearer.

HI. Yes, as far as I know it should work, and I think I have done it once in the past (but don't remember). Anyway - it is very very easy to test, so better just try it and see for yourself. Yizhar Hurwitz http://yizhar.mvps.org

Its very good question you ask, even i never thought it in long messaging carrer. But again i say if we talk about address space then it will come * or any fqdn name or any DNS suffix. Please check it and update me also Anil

You can not use IP in address space !! Address space stand for DNS suffix name or * can be use.Anil
