SBS 2008 - swap from POP3 to exchange
I have setup several SBS 2008 standard networks for clients just using their web Host and the POP 3 connector (smart host) etc. One client literately gets 1000's of spam a week to 10 or so email addresses – and the UTM firewall that is installed at their office comes with a Anti-Spam package – but requires that exchange handles the emails. How easy is it to swap the POP 3 connector and setup exchange? I know about changing the MX records etc. Is there a wizard in SBS 2008 or do I need to do it in the Exchange Management console, if so - is there a walk through on the net somewhere explaing this? Thanks Backgorund Their server is a white box setup which just has been commissioned (they paid $$$ for it a couple of years ago but was sitting around doing nothing, 2x single core AMD Opteron 1.79 GHz cpu's, 6 gig mem ~ 400 gig of free HD). I am in the process of researching this – but comments, suggestions, links would be greatly appreciated.

There is no wizard involved with the MX records. You don't actually have to change anything on the server at all - just ensure that anonymous is enabled on the Default Receive Connector. Change the MX records and then wait. Email will start coming in on SMTP shortly afterwards. As long as the server has been configured correctly, with ALL of the relevant email addresses on the user accounts, then it is quite an easy switch. Yes, in the SBS Console you can configure this through wizards by running Configure a Smart Host for Email and Add Trusted Certifiate. I recommend purchasing third party SSL Turbo Certificate from Go Daddy (the least expensive and they work). Certificate common name should be remote.yourdomain.com but the wizard will do this for you automatically when generating the Certificate request. You will need to create an A Record for this so users can access remotely through RWW or OWA directly for whoever handles your external DNS records. Pretty simple and it works great, done quite a few of these and whats nice is you do not have to use or purchase a SAN Certificate which quite a bit more expensive.MVP Exchange Server

The sever has been setup for pop3. I have already purchased and installed the godaddy certificate few weeks ago So I only need to click "I do not require a Smart Host" and then change the MX record to the "remote.servername.com" for all of it to work? The A record for mail.companyname.com is pointing to their hosting provider (webmail) - I can't change this IP address as the client has an dynamic ip address and are using DYNDNS (and CNAME is setup for this) to point to the servers external IP address. I have created another MX record (companyname.com) and is pointing to the DYNDNS name and has a lower number than the original MX record. Ive ran Smart host and clicked I do not require.." However when I email to the company it is still stilling in the Webmail hosting site and not being delivered until the POP 3 connector triggers (scheduled this to trigger every 50 mins). How do I setup the incoming receiver on the server or is it due to that I cant change the IP address for the A record for mail.companyname.com as it wont accept companyname.DYNDNS.BIZ and only 123.123.123.123?

The option about requiring a smart host or not has nothing to do with inbound email - that is outbound. If you are on a dynamic IP address then you must use a smart host as most major mail providers will not accept email from dynamic IP addresses. You also do not have to change the receive connector - other than ensuring that anonymous is enabled on the connector so that email is delivered. After making the change, restart the transport service. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources

"- other than ensuring that anonymous is enabled on the connector" Im assuming this is in Exch Man Console - Server Config, Hub Transport, Default SERVERNAME, Permission Group, tick Anonymous Users? Thanks for your quick reply!

If you are using DYDNS then you should still be able to use SMTP as the default protocol and eliminate POP3. You can set the Smarthost as DYDNS http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/mail_servers_and_mailhop_outbound.html. Do not see a reason to keep POP3 as it really is not the preferred protocol for Exchange 2007. And yes, on your Recieve Connector for Internet you will need to check Anonymous Users.MVP Exchange Server
