Retention policy tag Inheritance question

Hello

Running Exchange 2013 CU8. If i create a Retention Policy tag, and scope the tag to the INBOX, will the tag apply to items that are found in a sub folder beneath the INBOX folder? Example is below

Inbox------>UserCreatedFolder

Also will a Retention Policy tag that is scoped to the inbox apply to items in a folder that was created outside of the INBOX. Exmaple

Usercreatedfolder-------INBOX

From my understanding Retention Policy tag's apply to default folders only, and Default policy tag's apply to the entire mailbox. Is this co

My understanding is that the retention policy tag doesn't apply to subfolders.

Your understanding of the tags' scopes is consistent with my understanding and experience.

That is what i thought as well, however that is not what i am noticing. Example I have created a retention policy that includes   RPT scoped to the INBOX  has an age limit of 180 days and action of "Delete and Allow Recovery". when i examine one of the mailboxes that this policy is applying to, i notice that there are no email in any sub folder or folders created outside the INBOX, that are older than 180 days.  I'm kind of at a loss at the moment

Hi,

Yes, its correct according this document Retention tags and retention policies

I suggest to check if the outlook AutoArchive feature is configured on the sub folder or folders created outside the INBOX. Right-click on those folders -> properties -> AutoArchive tag.

If its not configured, please double check all the retention tags in that retention policy.

And if there are any inbox rules will redirect incoming messages to the sub folder or folders created outside the INBOX?

Best Regards.
