Restoring selected mailboxes from edb file
Dear all, I have *.edb, *.GUID and *.log files as backup for some Storage Groups. Is there a way to list the mailboxes from these files alone and restore a specific mailbox to the exchange server? It will be very helpful if you tell me an API or someother way to restore the selected mailboxes only to the exchange server from the *.edb file and other files. I am aware of OnTrack PowerControls that they can do my requirements. But, is there a way to accomplish my requirement without having to purchase a third party tool? Can someone please help me... Many thanks in advance, Nesan Joseph R.

What version of Exchange are you using? Have you tried a Recovery Storage Group? You can recover mailboxes there but not individual items.Otherwise I am not aware of a way to do this without buying a third party tool.SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

Thanks Bardapony for your response. Despite the Exchange Server version, i should be able to backup the whole exchange server or atleast a Storage Group fully(not as mailboxes, but as a database backup[*.edb, *.stm etc]) and should be able to enumerate the mailboxes/folders from the files available with me(*.edb, *.stm and log files) and restore the selected folders to the exchange server. We have no API or some program objects to accomplish this, so that I can integrate in a program and do a granular restore? I am aware that we can do so by using Recovery Storage Group option but I just wanted to know is there a way without spending money! ;-) Many thanks, Nesan Joseph R.

Hi, Base on my knowledge you need to use Brick level technology to restore single items such as single email. For instant you can use Microsoft Data Protection Manager. I am not aware of a way of doing a single mailitem recovery without getting a third party tool like the one offered by ontrack. With a RSG you coudl restore the mailbox to a admin mailbox in a sub folder and then pull what you need to a pst and then import it back.SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS
