Restoring e-mail account deleted during server migration
I' a volunteer at a local food pantry and recently took over managing the server. They had been running SBS 2003 on an ancient server and I just migrated them onto a new server also running SBS 2003. Prior to the migration of Exchange, I took the opportunity to delete an account that I thought was inactive. However, after the migration was complete, I found that the e-mail in this account was still used and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the e-mail back. When I go into the Exchange System Manager on the source server and expand Admin Groups/1st admin grp/Servers/SERVER/1st Storage Group/Mailbox Store/Mailboxes, I can see the mailbox of the person that was deleted (which is marked with a red X on it) and 68 MB of messages. I've tried a ton of things to try to get this restored/reconnected, but nothing has worked. So, instead of listing everything that I've tried and failed at, how can I retrieve this e-mail and hopefully migrate it to the new server? Thanks, Geoff

The best was to recover a mailbox with Exchange 2003 is to use the mailbox recover centerhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996202(EXCHG.65).aspxMake sure when you re-create the user that you don't create a mailbox for it.

I know you have already tried steps. But i would like you to give one more try Create one Dummy Account such as TestUSER Launch ESM Expand the Mailbox Store and click on Mailboxes Folder Right Click on Mailbox Folder and click on Run Cleanup agent Select the Red Crosses Mailbox and say Reconnect and then give the newly created AD account. Make sure it is connected. and then in order to Exmerge you need to launch outlook with the dummy account configured and then export it to PST. I would doubt if EXMERGE will work here since the account is different and Exmerge looks for LegacyexchaDN Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the recovery center when I go in later this morning. I must admit that I don't know how to create a user account without creating the mailbox. I use the Add User wizard in Server Management. I looked for some other way to do this, but wasn't able to find anything. Details on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. I did recreate the account (with mailbox) and can log into it. -- Geoff

I forgot to mention you that you need to create one account without mailbox enabled. Click on Start ->Run ->DSA.MSC and then create one plain account which should not have Mailbox Created. Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

When you create the user account, just remove the checkbox for creating a mailbox

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I solved it by following the instructions in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996202(EXCHG.65).aspx and creating an account without an Exchange mailbox. I really appreciate all of the help.-- Geoff
