Restore first storage group on server without disturb main functionality
I have a "first storage group" backup on tape and I read on web that I should have to restore it to restore a mailbox at the time of backup. How can I do to restore that backup WITHOUT interrupt main exchange service/functionality ? To create RSG, can I do this from Toolbox --> Database recovery Managemet ? If I link the to-be-created RSG to First Storage group (on the server) will it fail when I'll redirect the tape first storage group on that RSG ? I heard something about /disasterrecovery but I do'nt know if it is safe to execute. Any help appreciated. Best regards.

You don't have to run /DisasterRecovery switch, it is for recovering failed server and not for restoring mailbox. Hi Amit, I own an Exchange 2007 SP1. Thanks for links. Now I only have to find the way to export exchange data from backupexec managed tape. I encounter this window when trying to restore: http://snipurl.com/hxp4x so I don't really know if this is the correct option and, first of all, if it will cause problems with main server. Thanks.

Yes, looks like correct option but you need to create a RSG for the database where you want to restore from RSG, check RSG in Exchange 2007 link I have given earlier.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

I checked the link. The last thing I want to clarify is: When I created the RSG I encountered this step: http://snipurl.com/hxzq8 and the only option I can chose from is "First Storage group" The question is: Creating RSG "linked" to First Storage Group (as pointed out in the previous link) will cause issues to production activity when I will mount that RSG with restored (and previous) files ? Thanks for help and sorry for paranoia but if something will go wrong with emails I'm done.

No, it just links to original database and uses two attributesmsExchMailboxGUID & msExchOrigMDB and creates a logical channel for restore. Your backup software restores the backup of first storage group to the path mentioned while creating RSG. You can take a look of Exchange 2007 RSG article to understand and an article for Exchange 2003 gives you better idea, 2007 works in similar way.... If you have doubt then you can practice it in test environment, take a backup of First storage group before restoring previous data to RSG.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
