Restore Exchange 2007 SP1 CCR Database to a restore server on different Exchange org (restore server)
Hello there, Try to follow up MS procedure to do a mailbox restore to a restore server in LAB. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995898(EXCHG.80).aspx Production server is CCR 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008. In LAB, Exchange 2007 SP1 all roles in one on Windows 2003 64 bit SP2 I created SG and mailbox database with the same name as production and set-mailboxdatabase "DB1" -AllowFileRestore $true in lab However, get-mailboxdatabase "DB1" shows DB1 recovery false. run set-mailboxdatabase "DB1" -AllowFileRestore $true again, it says database is set so already no change will be made. get-mailboxdatabase "DB1" shows DB1 recovery false. use EMC to verify that the database can be overwritten by a restore is checked. However, once I tried to restore the backup set to the restore server, Symantec software failed to initilize the restore. V-79-57344-65237 I checked Symantec KB it states make sure production and restore server OS and SP should be identical. How about OS edition, CCR has 2008 Enterprise edition, will my restore server have to be 2008 enterprise edition too? Thanks,

Does your lab include a domain controller with a copy of the production directory?

I did this before for Exchange 2003. It worked fine. Has this changed for Exchange 2007?

Restore actually wouldnot look for directory, you can restore the database in any exchange server however mounting the database will look for valid Exchange org and administrative group name. you are trying to restore exchange 2007 bkf to exchange 2007 lab environment ? Narayan

Yes, I am trying to restore exchange 2007 bkf to exchange 2007 lab environment. The only difference, in production, we are in Exchange 2003/ 2007 mixed environment. In Lab, it's pure Exchange 2007 org with the same Org name. I think administrative group are different because of this. However, I don't care with mounting database. As long as I get *.edb restored to the restore server, I can use EMC Knoll application to read the edb file and export it to a pst file. Right now, the backup failed to initialize... "you can restore the database in any exchange server however mounting the database will look for valid Exchange org and administrative group name". That's what I think called portibility of Exchange 2007 database. Should OS version be identical to the orginal production Exchange 2007 server, version, service pack, enterprise edition of Windows? Anyone know if microsoft has white paper about this? Thanks again.

you can try to have the same OS version and the sp however edition should not be the concern.Narayan

Hi There, Sorry for late resonse. It takes time to rebuild the LAB. I am able to restore Exchange 2007 CCR DB to LAB with redirecting to alternate Exchange 2007 server SP1 using Symantec Backup exe 12.5. 1. AD, you don't need identical AD from your production. If you use duplicated AD from your production (mirroring disk with same hardware from your production), you had better use discover recovery setup option to install your Exchange 2007 Server. 2. Exchange ORG must be the Same name as your production environment 3. Administrator Group must be the same as your production environment 4. Since our production is Exchange 2003 SP2 and Exchange 2007 mixed, I will have to install Exchange 2003 SP2 in the Lab first, in order for us to create the same default AG of Exchange 2007 server once we installed the first Exchange 2007 server SP1 in the Lab. 5. OS edition doesn't matter: Production Exchange 2007 SP1 CCR on Windows 2008 Enterprise SP1. In Lab Exchange 2007 SP1 standalone on Windows 2008 Std edition. I think we should be able to use Windows 2003 SP2 too. not test yet. 5. Will update LAB to Exchange 2007 SP2, to see if restore from Exchange 2007 SP1 DB will work or not. Thanks all for your discussion with the issue. I will share my results later. Have a nice day. Note: if you use different AD from your production, you can join your Lab to your production network (not domain, of course)

updated the restore exchange server from Windows 2008 std SP1 to SP2 and Exchange 2007 SP1 rollups 10 to SP2. restore still works great (note: used backup tape from production Exchange 2007 SP1 CCR).

what is you purpose to install the exchange in LAB? restore DB, right? Exchange Exchange Database is portable. You don't have to be the same server name. But you need the same Exchange organization name, Administrative Group and Storage group and database name in order for you to mount the database. Since you restore AD from production, you should have same Exchange organization name, Administrative Group already. Just install new exchange 2007 standalone server with new name, it should work for DB restore purpose.
